regina george didn’t get sick.
at least, that’s what she told everyone. flu? no. allergies? never. hangover? over her dead body.
but the truth was sitting right there on her nightstand: an untouched glass of water, cold medicine still sealed, and a half eaten popsicle melting into the wrapper.
her phone buzzed under the pillow for the tenth time. she groaned, pulling the blanket higher over her head. her throat hurt too much to yell, her hair was sticking to her forehead, and her voice? god, her voice sounded like sandpaper in a blender. if anyone saw her like this, she’d simply die.
which, naturally, was when her mother’s voice echoed from downstairs.
“regina, sweetie? you have a visitor!”
regina buried her face in the pillow. “tell them i died!”
ignoring reginas pleads, june was already walking up the stairs, her heels clinking. she appeared in the doorway with a bright smile, followed by the last person regina expected. well, almost.
rodrick heffley stood there, clutching a grocery bag and grinning like he’d just broken into a palace.
"it was nice of you to let me in, mrs. george." he said. "thank you."
“oh, of course! regina’s been feeling awful. you’re sweet to come by.” her mom gave him a knowing smile before heading downstairs.
regina groaned. “you told my mom you were coming? that’s, like, social suicide.”
he grinned. “relax, she loves me. said it’s nice to see someone take care of you for a change.”
“i hate this.”
“yeah, yeah.” he set the grocery bag on her desk. “made soup, got some cough drops, and a coke. they were sold out of diet, don’t kill me.”
“you didn’t have to come." she muttered, trying to hide how red her nose was.
rodrick plopped down on the edge of the bed. “you didn’t answer my texts for twelve hours. i thought you were ghosting me.”
“i was sleeping.”
“same thing,” he said, eyes flicking over her face. “you look terrible, by the way.”
“finally,” she rasped. “someone's honest”
he smiled, a little lopsided. “well, i can’t let your ego rest even when you’re sick.”
regina coughed into her sleeve, but she was smiling too. “you’re lucky i'm too weak to throw something at you.”
he opened the thermos and poured soup into a mug. “eat before it cools down.”
she hesitated. “you’re being awfully domestic right now. i’m not sure how i feel about it.”
“just say thank you, princess.”
“...thanks.”
“see? didn’t kill you.”
regina takes the mug from his warm hands. the soup was comforting, a bit bland but not like she can taste anything anyway. rodrick leaned back on the bed frame, tapping playfully on the comforter.
“you weren't ever supposed to see me like this." she mumbled.
he hums. “like what, exactly?”
“like all gross and sweaty and…”
“still hot though” he interrupted, smirking.
“rodrick.”
“what? i'm serious. you could be a- i dunno, a worm? and i’d still think you’re hot.”
"you're so stupid." she giggles softly. rodrick reaches over and brushes a strand of hair off her forehead. his hand lingers for a moment.
“you’re burning up,” he murmured.
“yeah, no kidding.”
“want me to stay?” he asked softly.
regina blinked. “you’d really stay here with me? while i'm like this?” she asked sarcastically.
“oh, trust me. i've survived worse."
she giggled weakly. “you’re gross.”
he shrugged. “it’s part of my charm.”
regina leaned into his touch, her voice small. “you don’t have to. really.”
“regina,” he said gently, “you know i’m not going anywhere.”
she felt like melting into the bed on the spot. how casual he said it, how comforting. she rolled her eyes, but he just leans further down in the bed, gently pulling her closer to let her head fall on his chest.
they stayed like that for a while, her breathing becoming slow and even while his fingers began tracing absent circles on her arm. plus the occasional head kisses she would receive from him.
“you’re comfy.” she mumbled, half-asleep.
“yeah, i get that a lot.”
“no, you don’t.”
he chuckled. “no, i don't.”
regina paused. then, muffled against his shirt: “don’t tell anyone you came over. i'm.. glad you did though."
he smiled into her hair. “only if you don’t tell anyone i made soup.”
when she finally drifts to sleep, he reaches behind him and turns off her annoyingly bright lamp. he kisses her head a final time. light, careful.
her mom peeks in an hour later and freezes. regina was asleep, curled up under the blanket, and rodrick was beside her, an arm around her waist and one behind her head, snoring quietly.
june just smiled and closed the door again.
inside, regina stirred, half asleep. “you’re snoring." she whispered.
“shh,” he mumbled. “rock stars need their beauty sleep too.”
she laughed softly, nestling back into his chest. “love you.”
even though he's half asleep too, he smiles. “love you too, princess.”
