She nodded along to the conversation that was happening around her, throwing in a perfectly timed ‘yeah’ or ‘agreed’ as though she were truly tuned into what her friends were discussing. She was more focused on the hunger that had her almost eating breakfast before brunch, and ridding her head of the thoughts of the night before. Who the fuck liked brunch anyway? As an early riser she could never hold out until 11 and always ended up eating brunches that consisted of mimosas and a waffle or two. 

It was when Maya walked through the front door that Sofia was fully able to tune out the conversation going on around her. She wasn’t sure if she was relieved to see the other woman or dreading their interaction. Her feet moved her toward the door, but not before grabbing a second mimosa in offering. She had never been confronted with someone she had snuck away from in the early hours of the morning, though a mimosa seemed like enough of an apology if necessary. “You didn’t follow me here, did you? Because I hate to break it to you, but on a scale of one to ten, this brunch is probably a three at best.” She held the second drink out in offering as her eyes moved over the brunette, a smug grin taking to her lips in appreciation of a night well spent.

For Sofia Reyes, embarrassment was a rarity. That was most likely because she was never faced with the person she had slept with and snuck out on hours after sneaking out on them. And they were rarely as captivating and good looking as Maya. There was something about her which had quickly caught her attention the other night, which only became more enticing as the night went on. Frankly, that scared the shit out of Sofia and made the decision to leave before the other woman woke even easier.

Brunch seemed to go painfully slow – she was four mimosas in and had stolen more glances of Maya at the other end of the table than she could count before it finally finished. Once the table was cleared, she moved across the room to her most recent one-night stand. Why couldn’t she have been good looking but boring like everyone else? And why on earth did she have to be here this morning? “As much as I love a good bagel, that was really hard to get through. What are you doing right now? There’s a nice trail a few houses down that I was going to walk…wouldn’t hate having your company. Maybe I can make up for ditching you this morning.”
