Summary Being faced with blood was normal for you as a researcher, it was something you saw frequently as you ran tests on blood samples in the lab. So when a supposedly dead vampire awakens in the morgue next door to you and launches an attack on anyone it crosses paths with, is it the blood or the day-walker that saves you that makes your heart beat out of your chest?
Authors note Vampire hunter Sophia 😛 - also this is my first time writing in 3 years so idk if this is a one time comeback or I’ll fill write more… we’ll see. I wrote this at 3am so this is not proof read. Enjoy
It was another long night in the lab and after 9 hours staring at blood slide after blood slide through a microscope, your eyes were straining and it was finally looking like home time was nearing. That was until your coworker Doctor Bennett sat down next to you and you had to endure him telling you about the latest body that had just come into the morgue. Who. Cares. Sophia had never like him, he was always trying to make conversation with you about things that were actually irrelevant to you, although you let it slide when Sophia wasn’t around to scare him off because he was actually harmless, just insistent. However it seemed that he didn’t plan on returning back to the morgue without you following, so you did. The quicker you got this over with the faster you were free to go home.
You hoped it would be soon.
You followed him into the morgue as you both began examining the body, you checked his mouth which revealed his canines were rather big and sharp. Very sharp. Bennett began examining the torso, pressing down along the sternum to check for any anomalies when the body launched itself off the table and towards Bennett.
It latched onto Bennett’s neck and the blood, how was there so much blood from a single bite? You stood at the head of the table near the doorway, watching as this ‘thing’ repeatedly bit your coworkers neck, bleeding him dry. His blood pooled around his feet as it ran from his neck down his body, soaking his uniform. Bennett was still stood (if you could even call it standing) due to the sole fact that the creature was holding his body upright as it continued to what you could only describe as feast on him. When Bennett had no more blood left to give the creature, his body crumpled onto the floor lifeless as the creature dropped him and turned its focus to you.
You turned on your heel and ran out of the double doors of the morgue and into the hallway that of course was empty. As you stopped for a split second to choose where to run next the creature came up from behind you and grabbed ahold of you as it tried to gain access to your neck. You felt is teeth scratch at your skin above your pulse point, ready to pierce through and repeat what it’d done to Doctor Bennett- bleed you dry.
It was only then that the lights blacked out for a split second and when they turned back on a figure stood across from you, holding what seemed to be a shotgun. Aimed directly at you and the creature.
You pushed backwards against the creature behind you, enabling you to gain distance from it as it fell against the floor, enough so that this ominous figure could take a clear shot at it, sending it further into the floor. The figure stepped forward and revealed themself, herself now it was clear.
She reached forward to your neck and brushed it gently with her gloved hand, when she pulled back her hand was coated in blood - maybe this creature had pierced through your neck after all? Your hand shot up to your neck as you cradled it putting pressure on it in hopes of reducing the bleeding which you were now highly aware of.
Just as you were about to thank her she grabbed your hand and pulled you into a side hallway as the creature had risen again. “Stay in-front of me and keep running” she yelled to you her voice firm and protective as she pushed you in front of her as the two of you ran through the hallway towards the west side of the building with the creature behind in pursuit.
You heard consistent shooting as she shot at the creature behind you both but it wasn’t bullets she was firing, it was stakes. You always thought that stakes were a cliche weapon choice from all the fantasy movies you’d watched, however seeing Sofia with them now made you realise just how effective they were. Although you didn’t have time to think too much on it as you reached the side of the building. The only way is down. The creature was still behind you but Sophia managed to put some distance between you both and the thing.
“We need to get out of here now.” She said as she looked down towards the ground and scanned the surrounding rooftops. Neither of you had noticed your sudden tiredness and lack of energy despite the run you had just done. The blood loss was finally catching up to you as the adrenaline wore off from your encounter. “I can’t move, if I move I’ll pass out mahal” you whispered to her next to you.
Sophia sighed and turned back to look at the creature closing in on you, “we don’t have time” she bit her lip anxiously and looked around the rooftops once more. You were only on the 6th floor so she scanned the area for any ledges, fire escapes or rooftops that were at least 4 floors high that you could jump to and escape. “Over there, there’s a building 2 floors down. If we can jump down to it then we should be able to out run that vampire.” She told you as she pointed to the building below you. “Can you do that for me mahal?” She asked you and you nodded slowly, although jump was a stretch - you’d fall at your best.
She turned to face the creature, which you now knew was a vampire, and fired another stake at it, you watched as it lodged itself into the vampire’s shoulder as it jerked backwards from the force of it. She dropped her shotgun and ran towards the window, grabbing you before she leapt out of it and you both tumbled down towards the building below.
You don’t know how it happened since you were borderline passed out from blood loss but you landed on top of Sophia, somehow she’d ended up underneath you as you both fell through the air. You both groaned as you could already feel the headache incoming from the impact of the fall mixed with the light headedness you already felt and it was only then that you looked up at the window you’d jumped from and saw the vampire watching. Stalking.
You and Sophia lay there for what felt like hours but what was in reality only 3 minutes unmoving, hoping that the vampire wouldn’t see you or pick up on your breathing and resume its pursuit of you. Eventually the creature left and fled back inside the lab. You let out a sigh of relief as you lifted yourself up off of Sophia and sat yourself in-front of her.
“What the fuck was that Sophia?” You asked her, glancing back up at the window every now again to make sure the vampire hadn’t returned.
“You don’t want to know.”
“I don’t want to know?” You shouted at her exasperated that she had dismissed you so easily “Sophia that thing, which I know is a vampire by the way, just killed Bennet and tried to do the same to me! And it would’ve been successful if you didn’t arrive when you did, which I’m grateful for but is very coincidental!” You paused for a moment to try and calm yourself down and took a breath before finally looking at her properly for the first time that night “how did you know to come?” You finally asked.
Her eyes stared back at you and she let out a sigh when she answered “I thought you knew y/n I swear. I tell you everything about my job, I thought it was obvious.” She reached for your hands and held them gently in her own and when you didn’t interrupt she continued “Im a vampire hunter and I’m so sorry I should’ve never expected you to assume that I worked with vampires, well, hunted them.” She tightened her grip on your hands and leaned forwards to rest her head on your shoulder “I was hunting that vampire today. Some shit went down at a club and I thought I’d killed him, I really did, but clearly not. I don’t know if it’s pure coincidence or on purpose that he ended up at the morgue in your department but I’m so sorry.”
You felt for her you really did but you couldn’t help wonder what would’ve happened if she hadn’t followed the vampire’s body to the morgue, or if she’d arrived later and you’d already met your fate.
You lifted her head up off of your shoulder and wrapped your arms around her neck, leaving a quick kiss on her forehead. “Next time tell me when you’re busy hunting so i can grab a stake or two” you laughed lightly trying to lighten the mood “but i want to know when you’re hunting so i can be more aware and look out for things, okay?” You asked her and she nodded solemnly.
Slowly a small smirk made its way onto her face “does that mean you’ll come with me next time?” She asked you.
“Nice try mahal.” You laughed “but can we please leave and go to the hospital before I lose anymore blood?” You asked her half joking but also deadly serious as you began to stand up.
“Oh shit yeah that’s a good idea”
