Soddie - June 2022 This reproduction sod house, often called a soddie, was at the entrance to Toadstool National Monument. The walls are still in very good shape, but the wood used to hold the roof in place has deteriorated greatly. Evidently the weather has not been wet enough to maintain grass on the roof and the cacti have taken over. The second image is the inside of the soddie. It isn’t a great deal smaller than our RV in which we full time, but there is no division of living space. I think everyone would tend to get on each others nerves or stay outside a lot of the time. That would be difficult in the wintertime. The image of the outside is basically a tourist shot, but the image of the inside is rich with textures, shapes, and shades of brown. MWM

A soddie was a house made of slabs of sod from the prairie ground where there were tough grass roots to hold it together. The slabs would be placed on top of one and other, doors and windows were covered with sacks, and the roof was thatched.
