Prologue: One Skeleton's Laziness is a Detective's Goldmine
Mt. Ebott city, just a little over a year ago this very place was where the first people, minus the ambassador of course, to see real monsters up close and personal. They made their presence known and where humans alone hate on their own species, it was clear this wasn't a place for an entirely new sentient species to show up with no warning and only scary stories serving as prior "knowledge" about them. In the span of a few days it was like another war had started, blood and dust littered the streets and alleyways, a lot of people seemed to only love one thing about monsters, their deaths bringing the humans exp and lv. This battle seemed strange though, like a launch back in time, monsters and humans alike were breaking into groups, mafia groups to be exact. Calling themselves all these bigshot names to strike fear into the other mafias, they all fought over the dumbest stuff, territory and money, that's all they cared about and they didn't seem to mind the many innocent lives it costs to get it.
Those who chose not to fall into the life of a mobster had to find other ways to get money, many lines of work only paying enough to barely get by with rent. A person had to hold multiple jobs to pay "protection fees" to the mafia owning the land they live on, protection fee standing more as a saying of "pay us or you'll be leaving this town in a body bag" so to speak. You may be wondering where the police are, surely they would intervene, it is their job to stop crime after all, but every cop in this god forsaken city either directly worked with the mafia or they were paid off to ignore the next body in an alleyway. But someone has to fill the role of Justice Bringer and that someone just happens to be a rookie detective who doesn't even work for law enforcement.
Hi, I'm (y/n), otherwise known as Mt. Ebott City Detective.

Yet another deal going south, agreeing to meet with the leader of Blood Bath mafia solo wasn't the best idea, but here Hound was. It was supposed to be a discussion over territory, but the idiot just had to open his mouth and spout out some racist bullshit slurs about monster kind then draw out a gun, Hound wasn't surprised; many monster haters always assumed they were better and stronger than any magic wielding monster. The man took aim but Hound just summoned a simple small bone attack, piercing the man through the chest with it before he could pull the trigger. The man died quickly like the other 5 men he and his 'brothers' had to deal with just today, it was exhausting, the rival mafias all seemed to be so trigger happy today. Hound decided he was too tired to hide the body properly, surely it was hidden enough as it is, they were in the middle of the woods, the animals would just eat the body and Hound can enjoy doing less work.
He decided he would go to Grillby's instead of heading straight home, he had a plan in his mind. Step one, leave the body. Step two, go out and enjoy Grillby's for dinner, maybe get a few drinks as well. Step three, come back and see if the body has been eaten by the wolves yet.

I sat at my office desk, five new cases in the span of just one day, no bodies left to be discovered yet again, just five new people presumably dead or missing. I sighed, yet again nothing to further investigate further for clues except the single piece of paper in each of the manila files, telling me where they were last seen, what time someone noticed they were gone and their names and occupations.
The only thing these people have in common was the fact that they were all involved in the mafia or a gang, at least I have the comfort of knowing there wasn't an innocent life taken today, none that were reported at least. As I was trying to get so much as a potential theory in my mind, I was interrupted by a knock on my office door. I closed the files, putting them away as I called out "Come in."
A woman walked in, she seemed to be in her late 20s with her blonde hair pinned back in a simple ponytail, she had makeup on but it seemed smudged, but it didn't seem like it was from actual crying, more like her trying to make it seem like she was crying. I knew she came in here to give me a new case to work on, she sat down in a chair and began telling me about her missing husband, her sad face was painfully obvious that it wasn't genuine.
"M-my husband was murdered by a rival gang in a territory dispute... He told me that he was going for a peaceful meeting but he was brutally murdered by whoever it was, I went to go check on him in the woods only to discover him lifelessly proped up against a tree-" a body? Found in the woods? An actual body to examine? I felt myself get shamefully excited at the thought. "-I want you to find the killer and make them pay for what they did, thanks to them my only form of income now is my singing routine."
So that's why she came to me, vengeance for the loss of her sugar daddy. I agreed to take the case and as soon as the woman left I booked it out of my office, locking the door behind me, and running into the woods with the newest manila file held tightly in my hands.
