Cultural Shaping of Self, Emotion, and Well-being: How Does It Work? (Kitayama & Park, 2007)
https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1751-9004.2007.00016.x
In this paper, we review the existent literature to propose that:
1. Different cultures have distinct views of self, which are instrumental in organizing daily routines, practices, and public meanings.
2. The resulting behavioral environment shapes personal motivational propensities;
3. The behavioral environment also carries information about normative expectations about what it is to be a ‘good’ person, and, as a consequence...
4. Culture has substantive influences on emotion, well-being, and health. In making this proposal, we highlight the distinction between personal motivational propensities and the society’s normative expectations.
The consequences of the cultural views of self on personal motivational propensities and those on the society’s normative expectations may typically be concordant and, yet, the concordance can be disrupted especially at times of rapid social change. Directions for future research on culture, emotion, and well-being are discussed.
Let's Try to Help You Get Started on Reading This
Heya folks, this one's an article from a Cognition & Health course I'm currently taking. In this paper, Kitayama and Park essentially introduce their theory (a scientific theory, not a colloquial theory) regarding cultural impacts on the self-shaping of an identity.
I don't personally condone over-simplifying long articles (after all, if a book could be summarized in 2 sentences, what was the point of writing it?) but I personally recommend this as a worthy read purely because it introduces the element of culture into self-identity and cognition of emotion. (It's also a relatively wordy read, so I've stamped some more complicated vocabulary with definition hyperlinks, especially for those who speak English as a second language.)
Given how Western-centric psychology is, it's important to highlight how a person's perception of identity may not always be harmonious with common ideals of identity and what composes an identity. I find that especially during the tumultous political environment in the US right now, it's crucial to bring an article like this to attention.
Kitayama & Park put it very well here (given the density of these texts to the average reader, I've highlighted the important parts for you):
The general guiding theme of this literature is that the socioculturally constructed environment (composed of patterns of meanings, practices, and products) provides blueprints for what it is that people are expected to do in their life, in what ways they are expected to do it, and eventually how well or poorly they actually do it.
It would follow, then, that there are multiple socioculturally distinct pathways to well-being. We may then expect that how people arrive at a sense of well-being is likely to vary with the sociocultural context.
It sounds like a no-brainer when you begin to understand it; but that's half the point of psychology, isn't it? To form an encompassing sentence that describes how abstract things occur and function in our lives.
The Hypothesis; What You Need To Know
First, at the core of the hypothesis is the notion that different cultures offer very different views about the nature of the self and the way in which the self is related to others. We contend that through history, often over multiple generations, culture’s practices (i.e., shared scripts of dining, schooling, interacting, etc.) and public meanings (e.g., societal common sense) are selected in reference to these views of self. [...] practices and meanings that are congruous with the predominant cultural view of the self tend to be preserved and those that are in conflict with it tend to be ‘weeded out’.
Essentially, the heart of the hypothesis is the idea that different cultures create different vies of an "ideal self" and the "nature" of the self, AKA "how" the self is composed, and how the "self" works. Over the course of history, our cultures form around these theories of "nature of self," influencing our ideas of schooling, cuisine, social interactions, and public logic/common sense of what is acceptable and what is not. Traits that align with this core "nature of the self" are allowed to stay, and traits that do not are quickly smushed away.
Second, in any given cultural context individuals may be bound to form motivational propensities that go along with the view of the self that is highly sanctioned in that context. At the same time, however, there likely exist substantial individual variations. One major empirical question is how to characterize this individual variability.
The second point goes into how individuals in any given society* are, whether they like it or not, predisposed to form motivational traits and urges that are harmonious or "fitting within the standards" of their social context. It also acknowledges that variations can exist, but are not favored to the degree that the majority-accepted traits are.
*=As humans, we are inherently born into society's influence even if we live utterly alone and off the grid; assuming you survived long enough to comprehend this, you had to have been taken care of in your wee little years by someone, and that someone was also influenced by a society at some point. Their influences will thus reflect onto you, even if you have never once interacted with society; that "someone" becomes your society.
Third, the culturally sanctioned view of the self also gives rise to the society’s normative expectations of what it is to be a ‘good’ person. Hence, psychological adjustment and well-being of an individual in the society tends to be relative to the society’s normative expectations. This implies that those who think, feel, and act in ways that are congruous with the culture’s normative expectations are more likely to achieve well-being and health than those who do not.
The third point finally goes into the construction of societal expectations of the definition of a "good person." As we know, the idea of a good person and morality varies all over the world, highly dependent on its respective culture. Kitayama & Park then propose the idea that because of the heavy influence on societal expectations of what defines a good person, it becomes especially difficult for those who do not fit the socially accepted definition of a good person to achieve happiness within their cultures, and easy for those who do.
Now You Give It A Try
As I've said before, if a whole article could be summarized in a couple sentences, I wouldn't be recommending it. Hopefully this breakdown of the basics you need to know to understand this article are helpful; give it a read and see if you come out feeling more understanding of the mechanisms of sociocultural psychology.
For your ease of access, I've linked the full article for free at the top of this post in the abstract; the doi is also at the top.

Bitches ain’t trying to impress the men they are trying to outdo other bitches. A lot of romance and relationships, to what women won’t admit, is based on economics and survival.
See, “sexy” isn’t a character trait, it’s a consideration given from the party in power to the disenfranchised party in this case from men to women. That sexy is what women use to gain certain advantages in life that they wouldn’t normally be able to attain just being who they are. This is why women be catty and backstabbing, this is why women be bitter, this is why women be bitches to each other. Because they are given the concept of love at an early age instead of the concept of freedom so women feel they need so many things whether it be money, or whatever to be safe and secure because at an early age women are told that they have very little to no one and nothing they can trust and even less they can do about it so when they get older they are bitter because they don’t have what they feel they should or are constantly scared that what little they have will be taken away from them. All because of an imbalance placed in women’s psyche at extremely young ages. This is why women who may be older want a man to support them because 1: they’ve probably never seen a man support them and don’t understand how hard it is to raise a family seeing as how her mother did it alone. 2. Are scared to lose what little they have to pursue love so they want a man that comes with an insurance policy a.k.a. Money to take in a divorce.
It’s incredibly hard work raising a family and ensuring everyone’s safety and it usually involves more than just the mother and the father however people overlook that because they have never grown up in a proper family.
Anyway, to wrap this up, like I said an imbalance is put in women at an early age that completely fucks up their understanding of self, others, relationships, economics and people. The only way to combat it is with open conversation and educating younger women not about beauty, race or sex standards, but about the value of freedom.
I said I’d be wrapping it up but I lied, for the problem continues....
It’s because men don’t see exactly what society forces women to do. Men are brought up under the assumption that they have to take on this huge responsibility of supporting, protecting and looking after women and children so they don’t really see women as whole beings. Men see women as dependent, aloof, careless and greedy because they think that women are to be the subjects of a man’s economic might. When you are brought up with little to no understanding of sex, nature and gender and are instead advertised consumerist culture 24/7, it results in a class of people who have to be totally dependent on another class of people for basic needs and human rights. The depended upon has an abnormal power imbalance in society by being the go-between for the corporate megalith and the consumer named the “employee”. That employee then exercised their own power over the dependent by becoming the dependents only source of nourishment, culture, activity, etc. These classes are mainly split along the lines of the sexes so men think they are to become some “Big Daddy Fat Stacks” and women think they are to live as a Princess who garner the favor of these over-bloated abusive oligarchs in training. Ultimately, no one wants to be a slave to consumerism in order to enjoy it, thus the slanted ideologies of “MGTOW” and “Red Pill” were formed by men to help other men “see their way out of the maze” when really anyone and everyone would appreciate freedom over having to be a wage-slave just to buy consumerist items that aren’t worth the life spent to get them. This is a huge and glaring source for the reason for divorce rates, abuse in relationships and the current arguments of who supports whom in a relationship because inherently the dichotomy was designed that there would only be one with the power and that will be disseminated at leisure to whom the powerful choose. Sound familiar?
The answer is simple: the American dream has failed. It’s time to move onto a new model of socioeconomic standards and practices else this rickety shamble we call life will crumble soon.
