Social Media Optimization & Marketing.
stephanie abrams
Co-Founder and CEO of Socialfly, Stephanie Abrams, on the business of social media, listening more than you speak, and failing often -- if youāre lucky.
Itās not surprising that Stephanie Abrams was once a theater-loving, entrepreneurial kid who ran a successful Beanie Baby⢠business. Now, she's successful in social media marketing, a career field that is a perfect fit for her natural knack for communicating and engaging others. But it was while working in sales at Marriott International that she learned an incredibly valuable, unconventional lesson about life ā a lesson that would ultimately contribute to her success not just in sales, but as a business owner and entrepreneur.
As she advanced in her career working at Hilton, Stephanie went out on a limb and āadvisedā her employer to use social media to promote its new spa. She volunteered to help the international brand with its social media efforts despite the fact that it was not part of her job. This unpaid experience taught Stephanie several things, including the potential and tremendous business opportunity of social media.
Eventually, Stephanie started helping some entrepreneurial friends with their businesses on the side. Soon after, she took a leap of faith and launched her first social media agency, Gabbaroo, in 2009. The venture didnāt go as planned, and Stephanie and her business partner parted ways. But at this pivotal point, when many others would have only seen failure and given up, Stephanie believed in potential (her own and that of the successful agency she envisioned) and remained focused on her goal.
Over the next six months, Stephanie took on a full-time job to save money for the business, applied her lessons learned from the previous experience, and launched Socialfly with a new partner. Today, that āsecond tryā has turned into a successful 10-person (and growing) shop that has helped hundreds of businesses enhance and successfully leverage their online presence.
Stephanie shows that everyone experiences failure, and things in life and career donāt always work out as planned. However, with perseverance and patience, we all can discover that āsomething even betterā thatās waiting for us down the road.
Breakfast Series | Social Media 101
Last week, we had the pleasure of inviting our friends from SocialFly, experts in social media to come speak to an intimate group of our designers. Ā The founders, Stephanie and Courtney, are passionate entrepreneurs who are experts in their craft, great teachers, and down to earth. Ā
Here are our key takeaways:
Take Your Time, Your Social Media Won't Happen Overnight
Content and time are the two key components for developing a healthy, successful relationship with social media. One should not be considered before the other nor should one be used without the other. Your content loses itās strength if you do not have the time to properly present it!
Ā Use Photos, Always!
Post pictures with each post; social media users are not reading text, but engaging with pictures. People will like ā both literally and with a āthumbs upā ā when your posts are visually rich. Never post anything that you wouldnāt personally like. You must be your own biggest fan!
Encourage Sharing, Your Fans Will Thank You
Encourage sharing across all platforms by using call to action words: āShare this if you feel the same way, too!ā Shares are a great way to increase exposure and expand your reach. The likelihood that your followerās friends have similar interests are high, so sharing allows that group to see your content! Sharing is a great way to market your product without having to pay for it!
SEO, or How People Find You
Ranking on Google is important! Fashion influencers are discovering products through search, ie: ābest accessories for weddingsā. Using social media organically can help you rank, but remember, it doesnāt happen overnight! By including keywords and hashtags with your content, your product will increasingly become more visible.
Watch, Listen, and Learn
Notice what content performs best, then run with it! If your audience is not liking/sharing, it means they do not want like/want to see that type of post. It is ok to intertwine your personal life with business life; it provides a sense of authenticity and allows your follower to develop a sense of you with your brand.Ā
Signing off for now, hope to see everyone at our next event soon!
