There were disastrous floods last week in the Nusa Tengarra region of West Lombok. Residents lost housing, work and some lives were also lost. As the ground began to dry and adults rebuilt living dwellings, CircusAid Lombok went to the Ireng Daye Village to deliver circus workshops to entertain the children and help them experience some moments of joy. During their month long training in 2020, the CircusAid Lombok facilitators learned about trauma healing through play and creative expression. They have been honing their skills and creating partnerships with the local community since then and have become a reliable and sustainable force of trauma healing on the island during times of natural disasters and rebuilding. Acro-balance is one of my favorite activities to do with CircusAid workshop participants. Not only does it teach essential life skills like trust, reciprocity and communication, but it also works to improve executive functions like initiation, planning and working memory. These cognitive capacities live in the prefrontal cortex of the brain and can be negatively impacted by trauma.
