Went back to Big Buckskin Creek today and oh my god THE SPIDERS.
Saw a six-spotted fishing spider (Dolomedes triton) like five minutes in!!! I love them and I've only seen two others, both in NC. The wind was picking up and the river was choppy and it ran across the water and then found a leaf to rest on
Found a spider exoskeleton (probably a fishing or wolf spider given the size and body shape)
Accidentally broke off a branch with two long-jawed orbweavers on it and then returned them to their tree
Found more cool exoskeletons
Almost dropped my paddle a few times + got it stuck in a tree
Climbed on the abandoned dock! It felt like kind of a bad idea because I didn't tie my boat up, just wedged it underneath, but it was fine and I can swim so whatever. There were lots of empty beer bottles and cans. Maybe I should clean it up next time I'm there? Though at least it's a floating dock, so less chance of all the trash ending up in the river than with a traditional one
First time using a dry bag on a lanyard for my phone. Should have gotten one sooner...like before I DROPPED MY PHONE IN THE RIVER (which it survived after all)...because it is really nice not having to remind myself to be careful with it and just being able to pick it up or let go of it vs. taking it in and out of my pocket a billion times!
Ran into a paddleboard tour group about 2/3 of the way down the creek (traveling counterclockwise/north to south this time) and the leader said there are gar in the river?!? Gar are adorable so this is fantastic news
I guess that's it. It was a fun outing and I'm excited about kayaking again in 2-3 days/once my upper body recovers
