The Darkling's hated for "forcing" Grisha to become soldiers when he had no say in their inclusion into society, yet the only position "The Heroes" offer once at helm is canon fodder in Ravkan wars they're losing.

The Darkling's judged for offering safety in return of service, when he wasn't in position to change the later, Nikolai's lauded for similar thing he does as a rich normie with absolute power. Wait, no. The trio of his suddenly accepted witch puppeteers does, not him.

The Darkling had Grisha come to him, offering them relative safety and community of alike from a position of a serf. KING Nikolai sends people to look for them (Possibly drawing attention to their whereabouts.) to offer them servitude and a promise there won't be even inquiry into crimes against them. It's enough they're outlawed, isn't it?

It's funny how some characters are fully blamed for who they are no matter HOW MANY ATROCITIES did they have to weather, yet others were made that way by their environment and deserve a second chance. And a third one. And probably several more, depending on how many of their children will Nina date.

I have nothing but severe criticism and contempt for Zoya as Nina's "mentor". There's not a single nice, motivating thing Nina remembers her saying. For some reason, Nina adores her for being cruel to her. Even her inner voice sounds like Zoya insulting her.

This is exactly Zoya in King of Scars duology, yet here she chastised Nina for the very same thing harshly enough to drive her away right into drüskelle camp.

Sorry, but "they needed her" is no excuse. Nina might have a gift for languages, but Second Army used to have education, so she shouldn't be the only one speaking Kaelish. I'm also pretty sure it's not ability possessed only by Grisha. First Army translators? Civil servants? Professional translators? None trustworthy enough to replace an undereducated teen?

There's also the tiny little detail otkazat'sya cannot be drafted sooner, but it's okay to send too young Grisha in the field. They've got magic. Who needs experience or maturity, right? All under a King, who allegedly doesn't mistreat Grisha, and his incredibly qualified Grisha advisors.

Zoya's supposed to be a general and act as such. She should've been through officer training! Dealing with people should've been among things she was taught! No amount of begging should influence her decision, and once she chooses to teach her charge through practice, she shouldn't only criticise, but also support and suggest ways to improve. That's what teaching's about.

And if Nikolai told her no... well, I thought they're friends, and being friends with the monarch solves every subject's issue, doesn't it?

Just the fact Grisha are perceived by their benevolent new King as just that- soldiers... to the point of sending them in the field untrained properly.

But MU, he didn't have enough soldiers to defend his collapsing country!

Yeah, and whose fault is that?! Who ignored slaughters of Second Army only to proceed with more, when the majority of remaining Grisha dared to join their only defender? Who bombed supply lines to force more Grisha to cross the Fold?!

For someone, who protested against lowering the draft age for otkazat'sya, arguing they'd keep deserting, he doesn't seems to mind doing the equivalent of that to Grisha. Perhaps because they have nowhere to run to? They're the Crown's property in Ravka and hunted outside of it?

You have to speak US-American for it, but at least Matthias was truly a child or young teen, manipulated by a trusted adult for nefarious purposes.

Or are we to believe Brum's achievements are all a result of his warm and fatherly personality? There's no one more loyal than traumatized kid you give clear enemy, something to believe, "honourable" cause to fight for and much needed support after they conveniently lose everything.

Righteous anger is a wonderful fuel.
