you find out shoto doesnât eat candy much, so he doesnât have any favourite candy. you immediately decided that needed to be changed. and after a quick snack run youâd ended up hereâcandy tasting with him.
none of the ones youâd gotten had really done it for him yet. even when you started rating them with him. heâd rate them honestly, but to him, none of them qualified as âfavourite worthy.â
âno-go for that one, then.â you mumble, barring it off of the list of candies you'd already tried. yes, you were taking this very seriously.Â
shoto wasnât allowed to have candy when he was younger, his father considered it junk food and therefore treated it like poison he wasnât allowed to have under any circumstance. heâs older now, though. and heâs had candy before, of course. but he doesnât care to have a favourite candy or chocolate bar, and he doesnât know why you want to find out which one he likes so badly to the point youâd made him test so many.
but you look so serious about it that he doesnât want to stop you. and any type spent with you was time well spent, in his eyes.
he knows this is your way of getting him to feel a bit more normal. he sees the look on your face when he mentions bits and pieces of his home life, of his childhood, of his father and things he was never allowed to do growing up. he thinks maybe thereâs more to this than just wanting to find a favourite for him. youâd always been sweet for him like that.Â
âoh, hey. letâs do these ones next !â
you pull out a new packet of candies. itâs one he realises he recognises. ohâ
âthese are my favourites !â you smile.
shoto knows these are your favourites. you always get them when you go for convenience store runs together, or get them from a vending machine. heâs never personally tried them.
âokay,â he agrees, but heâs already made up his mind.
he takes a handful and yeahâas heâd expected, they're alright. sweet like all the other fruity snacks heâs had. but when you ask him;Â
âso ?â with a curious side smile.Â
of course he responds with a nod;
âyeah, i really like these.â
your eyes widen like youâd made a breakthrough, he huffs out a subtle laugh.
shoto swallows, âyeah.â
âwhatâd you rate them ?â
he thinks for only a second âten.â he lies.
youâve caught him, it seems. you raise a brow in question.Â
âten ? what makes these so different ?â
shoto knows any of his potential truthful responses will disappoint you because he has no other reason other than these being your favourites, so he thinks hard.
âi like the fruitiness.â he responds, straight faced. he wants you to take him serious.
you raise an unimpressed eyebrow. you don't, clearly.
â...think pretty much every candy in the world is fruity, hotshot.â you shake your head with a laugh. âlook, you donât have to keep indulging me like this. we can stop now if youâre tired.â you say sympathetically.
âwe can stop, but not because iâm tired. iâve found my favourite.â he insists.
âshotoâthereâs no way these are a ten for you because of the fruitiness.â you say incredulously, snorting midway through your sentence.
â...okay, an eight then,â he admits, like every other high rated candy heâd tried up until know, you let out an âah-ha !â he smiles lightly.
âbut i donât need it to be a ten for them to be my favourites. iâve already decided they are.â he responds sincerely.
you blink at him, then blow air through your nose. reaching for his hand, which he immediately gives you, you play with his fingers shyly.
âcopycat...â you murmur. shoto hums happily in response.
