hi chat today we're gonna play a game of you're gonna sit down and listen to me yap abt lego monkie kid for however long this post is bcs I love it desperately and I just remembered that I have free will and I can do whatever I want 😁
So... Lego monkie kid....
I think it's a great show, honestly. One of my favorites a million percent.
I have been in the LMK trenches for about two years now (joined early January 2023) and it still remains one of if not my favorite show of all time
The animation is gorgeous, the story and characters are wonderful and the community (the good side of it...) is very welcoming and fun :]
Now I don't have very many specifics on the characters, story, and stuff like that... I can only really articulate that when prompted by a video or text post so... I don't think that'll happen here lol
But I do adore the way LMK has handled their villains. Specifically LBD and Azure
(any wrong information/mischaracterization can be blamed on my shit memory pls correct me nicely if I get anything wrong ty :3)
(potential LMK spoilers down below if you haven't watched up until season 4)
LBD and Azure are such interesting characters to me, as by the end of it, you can see they were truly doing what they believed was best for the world, but in the end got blinded by either ego, bitterness, or something else. And the two are honestly pretty similar (in my opinion)
LBD, the villain from literally the FIRST episode of season ONE, her whole motive is to wipe out basically everything, wanting a clean slate to restart the world anew. Shes seen all of the heartache and turmoil that humanity goes through, and sees how no one in the heavenly ranks does ANYTHING about it. They all just laze about, not caring about the ones they're ruling over.
Which is where her and Azure are similar.
They both have similar ideals, thinking that Heaven is corrupt in the way that they rule, that those with power should help the ones they rule, but instead see how they get neglected in favor of the luxurious lifestyle they've created in Heaven.
But, in the same way they have similar ideals, they both get too absorbed in their mission that it begins to warp their vision so to speak.
We see this the most in season 4 with Azure, we see him be friendly and helpful with Mei and MK in the beginning, but the moment they or anyone else really, disagree with him, or actively stands in the way of his mission, he becomes threatening and dismissal.
(Namely by the end of the fight right after MK & the gang get out of the scroll, when confronting DBK, and the argument he has with YellowTusk after he takes the Jade Emperor's power)
And I think we really see Azure's shift in attitude when confronting DBK, and after he takes the Jade Emperor's power
It begins with DBK, we can see in the scene how he potentially forced himself into their home, and has PIF and Redson hostage, even going so far as to basically insult DBK'S WIFE TO HIS FACE, and trapping them in the scroll, so that they wouldn't be able to stand in the way of his plans.
And once Azure gets ahold of the Jade Emperor's power, he truly is a lost cause. Because now that he's finally reached his goal (taking the Jade Emperor's place), he will stop at nothing to finish what he started.
Both LBD and Azure take things to the extreme, fighting for what they believe is right, but the thing is.. they were going about it in all the wrong ways.
As MK says in season 3, you can't judge things by their worst qualities. Is the way Heaven rules corrupt? Yes. But to go about fixing it in such an extreme way was doomed to fail from the start.
And you can see by the end of their respective fights, they realize that somewhat. Maybe LBD less so then Azure. And this is where they differ the most for me.
At the end of her fight, LBD isn't reformed. She still believes her goal was right ("We both fight for what we think is right"), and while she knows it's time to give up the fight, she doesn't relent her belief in her cause. Only vaguely warning MK of the pain of fighting for a cause you believe in.
And while we don't really get a "Oh damn I was wrong" from Azure at the end of season 4, as the world is cracking apart and he talks to MK and Wukong, he finally realizes he was manipulated someway, and can't control this power.
"How did you get out? How'd you get the scroll?" ... "..Because whoever it was, they must've known this would happen, wanted this to happen! And they used you to do it." (Wukong)
"...I just wanted to make the world a better place" (Azure)
And by the end, he fixes his mistake and literally dies for it.
And I've always found that fascinating.
These two characters, who have such similar ideals, going about them in kind of similar ways, but ending so differently
LBD fought for her cause until the end, she knew when to give up the fight, but she never gave up her cause.
Azure also fought to the end, but realized much sooner that he was wrong. His beliefs and wishes for the world are inherently good, but the way he went about it was all wrong. But he fixes his mistake as soon as he realizes it, and dies with a smile.
Idk I've always found the two so interesting, storyline wise, they're very fun to yap about...
I'm not sure how to end this so uh...
idk... add to the conversation in the notes maybe if u want? And... go watch monkie kid if you haven't already, it's really good you won't regret it :3
