stream of consciousness post about last night's Joe Pug show:
I hit a pothole of death just as we got off the highway into Ann Arbor and part of my van is broken. great.
but Brandi and I made it, and it's now our tradition (because this was the third time so I think that's enough times to call it a tradition) to smoke a bowl in my van in a parking garage before a show at the Blind Pig.
there is a brand new parking garage RIGHT across from the Blind Pig. convenient as shit.
David Ramirez is great. however the crowd did not give him the respect he deserved, and that made me a little sad.
I am also sad that working at a music store turned me into a monster. example: a musician walks on stage, and the first thing I think is "of course he plays a Guild." WHAT.
Joe Pug is fucking handsome, charming, funny, and talented. that smile. I forgot how funny he is though. he plays these super earnest songs and then, in his words, "is a snarky asshole in between."
watching him make fun of hockey and say no one gives a shit about it while in Michigan was super funny. lots of booing and people chanting things about the Red Wings. there was some good stage banter following that. I would gladly take a bootleg of that show if it were offered to me just for the banter and jokes.
he played all our favorite songs and it's nice when a whole room of people sing "I don't mind riding around" a bunch of times.
we were like a choir when he played "I Do My Father's Drugs."
of course there was some talk about the shhhhhhhhhhitty weather.
apparently he went to high school/is really close with a guy who is currently the announcer for the Lansing Lugnuts? he gave the guy a shout out because he was there and dedicated "Hymn #101" to him. small world. I think I was the only person who cheered when he said "Lansing Lugnuts," haha.
he wrote "Not So Sure" when he was 21. WHEN HE WAS 21. now he's 29 (story about how turning 29 was surprisingly traumatic, therefore 30 will be no big deal).
they are going into the studio in a month or so to record the next album. they played a couple new songs, which I dug. I still prefer him solo though. the rawness of the "Nation of Heat" EP is just so. goddamn. perfect. but I'm excited to see what he puts out next.
anyway, we had a grand old time and I can't wait to see him again.
