“You okay?” James asked after locking the door.
“She had no right to come here like that,” Reg answered, wringing his hands together.
“She was defending her brother.”
“Oh, so you’re on her side now, are you?” Reg snapped. James held his hands up in surrender.
“No, love, I’m not. She came in without all the facts, but I can see where she was coming from. I’d do the same for Sirius and he for me. Sometimes you don’t think rationally where family is concerned.” He’d thought that had been a good explanation, but Reg’s face turned thunderous.
“You forget, James. Sirius is my brother, more so than yours.” He got to his feet and stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door behind him. James sighed. He kept forgetting that Sirius was still a sore spot for Reg. They’d come so far since that first reunion, but he still felt a pang of jealousy anytime James referred to Sirius as his brother. It was one thing he refused to back down on, though, as to his Sirius was his brother and had been since they were eleven years old.
“Reg, love?” he said as he slowly entered the bedroom. Reg was sprawled out on the bed, casually throwing a half-empty bottle of sunscreen above his head and catching it again on the way back down.
“Go away,” he huffed, throwing the bottle again.
“Nope,” James told him, and snatched the bottle of sunscreen out of the air, tossing it in his still-not-unpacked bag from Sirius and Remus’s stag do. He crawled into bed beside Reg and hauled him against him, manoeuvring him until his head was cradled against his chest.
“You can’t get mad every time I refer to Sirius as my brother,” he said gently, but with a firmness to his words, so Reg knew he meant them. “I won’t stop doing it. You know I will do anything to make you happy, but not this.”
Reg chuckled against his side, and James looked down at him, surprised by his reaction; it was not at all what he’d expected.
“I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that,” Reg sang quietly. “I know I was being a dick, and I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine to have emotions, Reg, and I do understand why you get upset by it, and I do think this time was fuelled by Pandora’s intrusion. I forgive you, not that you need it. Now,” he said, pulling Reg a little closer. “Would you like to talk some more or would you like to pick up where we left off?”
“The latter,” Reg grinned and pounced.
