Before the Qing dynasty tobacco was used by the rulers and smoked through pipes.  By the end of the seventeenth century, the use of snuff bottles came into existence among the rulers and upper class of the society.  The use of snuff bottles lasted till most of the eighteenth century.  Slowly, snuff bottles became popular all over the country and among all genres of the society. It became a thing of social interaction. People started offering snuff while meeting with friends and on special occasion. It soon became a symbol to represent one’s wealth and position in the society.  Antique snuff bottles can still be seen in the modern museums and with the collectors who collected original snuff bottles.

The use of snuff increased with the rise of Qing dynasty and faded away soon after the decline of this dynasty. But, antique snuff bottles can still be purchased from the stores. One has to pay high price to own an antique snuff bottle. Original snuff bottles that originated during the Qing dynasty are a source of delight for the collectors. Snuff bottles were to be held in hand, therefore, superior material was used for making these bottles that appeared smooth and shiny in appearance. Antique snuff bottles look beautiful and represent the finest work of art.

The size of the snuff bottles was very small so that it can easily fit into the palm. Different materials were used for making the snuff bottles. The most common material that was used for making these bottles was glass. A small spoon was also provided with the bottle to take out the snuff.  Chinese snuff bottles became popular all around the world because they were beautifully decorated with the paintings and images.  It took a lot of time to make the paintings and carvings on the bottles.  Chinese snuff bottles became fashionable and no other thing was equivalent to these treasures available in china.  Extraordinary art techniques were used for creating these bottles and therefore these became the masterpieces of the ancient history of china.
