oh man my first instinct is to shout WATCH KINGS IMMEDIATELY, but i do feel compelled to disclose that the dynamic in kings au is pretty different from the show. so:

REASONS TO WATCH NBC KINGS:

do you like interpretations of old stories with cultural resonance?

do you like people doing terrible things to each other because power is currency, power is everything?

do you like people who have been trapped into a script since birth, struggling to break free and willing to do whatever necessary?

do you like stories with breathless scope, where god is a vengeful presence lurking just out of view, a world where faith can raise people to power and, equally swiftly, destroy them?

do you like people who have been called to a higher purpose, struggling with their place in the world and the weight of new expectations on their shoulders?

and, of course, most importantly: do you like sebastian stan, dressed exquisitely, trying to be happy and being thwarted at every turn? he kisses a boy, he cries, he gets injured and bloody. feel free to browse my kings tag. just to check if you do, in fact, like that kind of thing.

IF SO, PLEASE GO WATCH KINGS AND THEN SHOUT ABOUT IT WITH ME.

ways in which kings au is not very representative of the show:

jack benjamin (who is the bucky-figure) and david shepherd (who is steve) are not best friends. i know, it’s awful. they should’ve been best friends. here’s an illustrative quote from 1 samuels, english standard version: As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. like. please. i think the show’s jack-david relationship can be summed up as angry resentment on jack’s side, and baffled hurt at the rejection on david’s.

david is actually in a relationship with michelle, jack’s twin sister.

jack also has a boyfriend, joseph. full disclosure: that sex scene in the blackout chapter with steve & bucky? that’s a jack/joseph scene in the show. (um, not as explicit, obviously.)

the king & queen (silas & rose benjamin) and politics are way more prominent in the show than they are in the fic. like, they get pov scenes and everything.

also, the show ends on kind of a massive cliffhanger. kings au will probably hopefully not end similarly.

It’s not necessarily unpopular, but it’s certainly a niche headcanon: I am very adamant that Steve is a practicing Catholic. Everyone can fight me on this.

Also, as much as I love feisty pre-serum Steve, I think some people take it too far and make it so that he gets beat up, like, every five seconds. As well as being very principled and willing to throw a punch with the mushy things he calls fists on the end of the noodly things he calls arms, Steve is also very polite, so he would probably get into fewer fights than people think.

20 was an alright time. I was drunk for most of it. Those were the days.
