According to LIFE, "On a rugged, windswept peninsula of northern Honshu, farther north than any other primates except man, a small colony of Japanese monkeys is maintaining a lonely outpost against the elements. Thousands of years ago, when the climate of Japan was milder, many more monkeys lived in these mountainous areas. Today (circa 1970) only about 50 are left."
