1/21/2019 4.73 miles/7.61 kilometers Back on track? YTD: 64.92 miles 21 days in a row
Cold! But not too bad with enough layers. Medium weight Injinji socks + medium weight smartwool socks. Neoprene biking tights. Thin short sleeve wool top. Thin long sleeve wool top. Two long sleeve medium weight wool tops. Thin balaclava. Thick beanie. Running mittens + Hot Hands™. The only things still feeling the effects of the cold are my toes; not sure what more I can do about that without buying bigger shoes (for thicker socks).
It feels like there’s a lump on the ball of my foot. Maybe it’s just a thick callus I need to file down. Who knows?
4.5 miles called for on my 2019 master plan, 4 mile route slightly modified to add some more distance. Looks like I got it.
a little lost
1/20/2019 1.06 miles/1.71 kilometers Chilly! YTD: 60.19 miles 20 days in a row
Timing was terrible - didn’t really have enough time (or gear) to run in Boston before we left, we were traveling FOREVER - had to stop and visit the cemetery where my mother-in-law is buried, the roads were in terrible shape, had to return a rental car, and we had no idea about the status of the airport, so we left super early. We ended up getting to the gate about 3 hours before our flight was scheduled, so we waited.
Finally got home at 7:15 or so for a whopping 8 hours of travel. We were famished but I didn’t want to run much later (or with eggs and chorizo (from the take-out place we decided on) in my belly), so I picked up the food so everyone could start eating while I went out for just a mile.
The sidewalks were MOSTLY in great shape! Sure, a couple of plowed spots I had to hurdle over - but that was no big deal. All until I got to the house at the SE corner of Lockwood and Foster. Those folks couldn’t be bothered to shovel on Lockwood AT ALL..
I came running up from beyond that red car (I think the same car was there last night) and as soon as I crossed the alley I could tell. At least half a foot of snow with a couple sets of footprints near the garage. I couldn’t even tell where the sidewalk on Foster was supposed to be so I ran between the frontmost bushes. Only to immediately notice my error because it looked like at least someone had shoveled on Foster.

2/10/2018 8.00 miles Just Carlo and me YTD: 122.75 miles 41 days in a row
We were slammed by some snow on Thursday/Friday, so it was tough getting folks motivated to slog it out. Not me and Carlo, though!
We trudged through snowy sidewalks until we got to the forest preserve. We ran in some ruts a truck had made over the path, but then when we got to the split we instead took to the parking lots and forest preserve roads (all of which were very nicely cleared) and ran some laps in there instead of continuing to run on truck-packed-snow.
We only saw one doe peek her head out of the woods and go bounding across the lot and into the woods on the other side.
Later on to help the kids keep their minds off heavier things we went to the same forest preserve for some sledding.

Here you will find a collection of images, videos, and writings that capture pieces of our relationships with the snow, the ice, the winter, and the land. Consider it a love letter to humanity and to Earth alike. To feel the snow—to make homes in it, to accept it, to play in it, to befriend it—is to remember we are alive.
Today's workout was...
Shoveling snow!
I think this is my first time shoveling a driveway since I got in shape. Man, it's a hell of a lot easier when you're not out of breath and feeling like you'll have a heart attack! Seriously though, it reminded me just how difficult things were for me a little over a year ago. Life is just so much more enjoyable when you're in reasonable shape.
