July progress update
Awawawaw.... this is lavenderSiren. June was... well... it was a thing.
my garden did a lot of growing at least. the tomato plant finally looks healthy, even after accidentally getting one of the branches bent due to weight concerns. but it's back to a healthy state and it's set to produce at least a handful of cherry tomatoes.
the sunflowers have grown a few inches since I took this photo, and the tomato plant many inches in many directions.
Edit: a week later this plant has absolutely gone nuts with its growing. I've been pruning and propping this thing all over! as for the radishes, apparently if you let them keep growing, they start growing these bean pods with a good crunch and pleasant flavor. not as flavorful as snap peas, but very nice if you need the texture in a stirfry or a salad. I got a grand total of two or three strawberries off of my strawberry plant, and the strawberries kinda sucked. the mint is really going at it, the sunflowers are growing, and the various other plants are doing their thing, though I get the feeling that I should be supercharging them with fertilizer or something.
it also attracts a lot of pollinators!
overall, my garden is thriving and it's probably kept me sane (enough to function) over the course of the difficult weeks I've been dealing with, being able to see such growth made possible by my own hands.
in regards to game work, there admittedly hasn't been very much going on for A Snowball's Quest. I'm always either tired out from work, stressed out from home drama, or busy with adult activities (such as shopping, TAXES, laundry, unpayed cover letter transcription...), or forget to do things, or getting hung up on the elaborate details of particular assets.
nyoom!
that being said, I did get things done. kinda. most prominent thing however, is the zoom fade transition. it is of course designed to be used right before combat. it uses a number of newer features that are available via the maniac patch, such as taking a screenshot and setting it to a picture. come to think of it, there's a lot of things I could do with this method, but I think I'll stick to a basic one for now.
for a while I had tried to make tiered choice boxes (in the sense of having old ones still on screen until dispelled), but I couldn't quite figure it out. those changes got reverted. I have considered having the old boxes be replaced by screenshots while inactive, but I'm too zoned out and low on spoons to implement that.
fun fact: I had to grab a journeymap render of the Minecraft map to get a proper overview to base this off of.
meanwhile, most of the work has been getting done on the map visuals of unity village, due to being a hefty but reasonable task that I can tackle while at low spoons for programming.
at some point last week or something, I had a breakdown about not having enough time and energy to do what I truly love to do.
I practically live for my projects. adult activities are merely maintenance for making them possible. at least in theory. but between my loud family, the lack of quiet time in the morning, and everything else on my back, it was just... hard to do much of anything. granted, part of this was a low after a high caused by starting birth control for my mood issues, but it still sucked. as a result, I slept for half a work day and scheduled my vacation. with that extra bit of rest and a week of time scheduled away from my family to relax, go on adventures, and focus on game development to look forward to, my condition improved, but home troubles continue to hamper my efforts.
Edit: a week later, my brother finally got a job and conditions at home have improved considerably. his schedule is set up so he's at work when I get off work, and he sleeps in when I wake up, so I literally only need to encounter him during the middle of my days off! I felt more refreshed than I had in quite a while on Friday, no longer having to feed off of all the anxiety that he was projecting into the house.
Dice has been with me through the worst and best of it all, and they are so dear to me.
speaking of team members, Orochii has been working on drekirokr, which is encouraging to see, considering it is kinda his long term big project. I do sorta wish he would at least take a stab at his assignments over here though. I get that he has similar difficulties as I do, but he's got like, actual professional programming skills! but I digress.
Renn's system has been working through various personal issues together, even some that had been inflicted by our ex gamedev partner that is no longer in fallingstar. She's collectively planning on getting back on the ball soon, which is encouraging.
I recently convinced my girlfriend Wertercatt to return to fallingstar, at least to hang around. It has priorities elsewhere, healing from its own traumas, but I'm glad to get more time to spend with Wertercatt.
Dice has been working diligently on various music tracks, converting the few conversations we wrote recently to a usable format, and generally being there for me in times of need.
also, Gabri has been doing her own thing, but has provided some valuable insight into high level play that may benefit the design of the battle system.
A wild starly appeared!
in terms of things I want to do this month, I want to put together at least a functional prototype of the battle system. I've got disparate notes scattered about regarding the complexities of what I'm planning, but I've yet to consolidate it into something usable.
I also want to get field actions put together. considering I've got a lot of eventing from Snowball's Chance to draw upon, this should hopefully be a lot easier, but I assume the limitations of 2k3 may get in the way from time to time.
(those ice holes are actually placeholders for ice growths)
speaking of Snowball's Chance, Renn has gotten me back into the groove of figuring out some puzzles for the bear chase section, so look out for that!
one thing that I think will make things a lot easier though, is the differing way I plan on handling party members on screen. previously, I had used a script that puts followers on the map and lets you use move event stuff on them, with no leader swapping. however, this time, I plan on taking more of a left beef chapter 2 approach, where you can choose a party member to swap to, with an event usually representing a party member that you can swap to.
Rather than using the rotation method (which proved to be an absolute mess to adapt when I tried to port it to a very early version of HyacinthHeld), I'm instead going to take a menu based method (more similar to the swap method in super paper mario), so you can choose exactly who you want to control rather than having to scroll a bunch. this will also make signature move usage a lot easier, as I can just replace the field move options based upon which party member is being controlled! I may need some way to recall the group to a safe location however, in case the player accidentally causes an impossible situation. or at very least an option for party members to scoot past each other as needed.
For my vacation, I'm planning on going to lincoln city, a town on the oregon coast that is dear to my heart. My dad used to live there and I'd visit him every weekend and summer. I especially loved the summers I spent in Road's End.

The view of the sea from the front patio was breathtaking, yet immensely calming. There were always places I could go to for adventure, whether it was the sandy beaches themselves or the mountain trail leading up to an overlook so tall that you could see most of lincoln city but also even the curvature of the earth over the expanse of the ocean beyond. I plan on documenting the heck out of my few day's long stay over there, as it will be a time to remember, and a valuable source of first-hand research for my games. Like heck, I'm planning on cooking stuff over a campfire on the beach! (though mostly because the alternative is making everything in the microwave in the hotel room, and that doesn't appeal to me as much as the challenge and reward of campfire cooking.)
Y'all can probably see where a lot of the plot of snowball's chance came from just from this information alone. Let's just hope I don't wind up becoming an underqualified trail guide in the process and remember to actually make it home lmao.
I've got a lot of plans and ambitions here. I can only hope that I can get the time to work on it while I have the time and condition to do so.
