Simon when he’s been relieved of duty for the day and someone takes over, he goes to see if Grace is still there (which he is) working and Simon uses the radio to chat to him.

“Dr Grace. Shouldn’t you be at home already?”

And Grace obviously jumps because that’s not Carl but he relaxes when he sees it’s Simon and he asks through the radio “what time is it?” Because you know Grace is the type to get so sucked into his research he doesn’t realise the time.

i haven’t been able to stop thinking about it as well ngl!!! there’s so much potential!!

i love the thought of them communicating through the radio all day long, like imagine ryland just throwing science puns/jokes all day long through the radio because he doesn’t want simon to get bored. simon insists that he’s used to "doing nothing" for extended periods of time, that’s his job after all and he’s been doing it for a while now, but he just doesn’t want to admit he likes the company, even though it’s not physical. and he especially hates to admit that ryland’s jokes and puns are actually funny.

Can I offer an alternative version? For a happy ending for the two ? (I'm a sucker for happy endings, even if it means two idiots in love sent light years away into space in a suicide mission. Anyway, the explosion triggered some PTSD emotional response to Simon after it happened, and he worked on it by staying close to Grace or something

Cue to the moment Ryland is told "you have three hours" and he seeks out Simon and have a mental breakdown because he doesn't want to go, he's scared and "I don't want to lose you, Simon, not when I still haven't be able to tell you that I-" (maybe cut by the two kissing or something?)

Quick flash forward, Ryland still tried to run away, failed, but oh, look at that! The snipper ex-special force we've enrolled to protect him does not quite agree to their method 👀

Smth smth, either Yao or Ilyukhina were badly hurt (not killed, no need to kill more people) and like, Simon goes to Stratt and says "send me up there then"

And because of all the time he spent with Grace, listening to him rambling about his research and all for years (maybe acting as his close security officer when travelling across the globe as Stratt took him everywhere to meeting) he does have the knowledge as well, and the gene too (yes but of a stretch, I know-)

Anyway, both end up in space and can have some sort of happy ending together too, haha (told you, I'm a sucker for happy ending, though I don't mind some angst but like... Not angsty ending lol)

WAITTTT THIS IS SO GOOD

i imagine simon BEGGING stratt to send him with ryland. he can do this! and he has nothing and no one on earth either. stratt refuses. unfortunately (or fortunately), the med kit was still laying around, and simon had discreetly grabbed a syringe from it when he entered the office. he puts the needle to his neck.

"i’m gonna do great, i swear. just— just send me."

stratt doesn’t have time to stop him, he stabs himself in the neck with the syringe, injecting what’s inside. he’s not even sure this is the coma drug. he hopes it is.
