There are some patients at the SNF who have super matted hair on the back of their heads because they’ve been (sadly) bedridden for a couple days. One of my treatment sessions with a patient was detangling a mess of matted hair for a patient who had hair that went down to her waist. 30+ minutes of slowly and painfully working out the tangles (”Don’t come near me with scissors. I’m not cutting an inch!” “I could have had dreadlocks by now!”) and we got the hair to the point where it could get brushed through. The next day, the patient’s son approaches me, saying his mother wants to say something. Uh oh. I walk into her room and she has long, beautiful braids.
“Thank you, honey.”
I’ve never seen a hygiene & grooming task that was so meaningful to a patient before, but I’m glad to have been able to help her towards that goal.
In the course of 2 days I’ve been asked by a patient to clean out their earwax (which I politely deferred to the CNA), been thanked by a patient for listening to them while they were fighting a panic attack, and been told to “Wake up and smell the coffee so that I can pour it on you!!” by a patient who was getting evaluated.
