Snap CEO Reveals Company is Testing a Simplified Version of Snapchat
Snap Inc. is currently piloting a "simplified version of Snapchat," as shared by CEO Evan Spiegel in a recent internal letter. This new version aims to enhance the platform's accessibility and user experience. However, given the tumultuous reception of Snapchat’s 2018 redesign, some may be wary of this new effort.
Spiegel’s letter, released Tuesday, was part of a broader effort to bolster employee morale amid a challenging year for Snap. The company’s stock has plummeted nearly 50% in 2024, raising concerns among investors about the platform's growth trajectory.
The "simplified" Snapchat might target older users who have previously struggled with the app’s complex interface. While Snapchat remains popular among younger users, attempts to broaden its appeal have met with mixed results. Spiegel had previously acknowledged user feedback on Snapchat's difficulty, leading to a significant redesign in 2018 that ultimately alienated both new and existing users. The 2018 update, which placed stories and private messages in a confusing layout, sparked a backlash that included a 1.2 million-signature petition for its removal and criticism from high-profile figures like Kylie Jenner.
Spiegel’s recent letter mentions that early feedback on the new design has been “directionally positive,” but emphasizes that any major changes will be made cautiously, likely in response to past missteps.
In addition to the new design, Spiegel discussed Snap’s strategic initiatives, including the launch of new ad features. Sponsored Snaps will allow advertisers to send messages directly to users’ chat inboxes, while Promoted Places will highlight locations on Snap Map.
Spiegel also touched on Snap's venture into augmented reality with Spectacles, positioning them as a unique market offering despite the presence of Meta’s competing AR glasses.
