The world had shaped them, once. Circumstances had given them a position and a set of skills, as well as a series of choices to make and a series of consequences tied to each and every one of those.

Now, breathing once again, was it truly their terms that shaped who they wished to be this time, or were they instead tied to fate in ways their soul could not entirely escape?

Invi found herself smiling as she cradled a teacup in the same gentle hands that had taken so many lives once, and she took a sip from her tea before replying. Her eyes remained hidden beneath the mask, yet she had lowered her scarf to drink and so both smile and a scar, crossing her chin and extending to her neck, were both visible.

“I wish to believe what you say is true.” She spoke, and there was some sorrow to her voice. “Though it still stands that we have been called to this time to play a role. We can choose to play it or defy it, that is true, yet its shadow looms over us, Ira.”

Both of them had been through so much already, so much he felt that they didn’t sign up for. Leaders always dealt with hindrances or complications, but their entire way of life has since crumbled both under their own hands and before their very eyes.

Or was it? Was it truly fate that guided them and were they inevitably locked in something that they had no control over? If they tried to change it, would they thus be fulfilling fate or is following the seemingly correct path the way fate didn’t intend? Ira reeled in his own head day and night if he could have done anything to change what happened. His role was to be the leader and he led- led to their destruction. Ira wasn’t sure he could even trust himself anymore. At the very least, he always trusted Invi.

“The idea of a ‘role’ sits sour on my tongue,” he huffed but finally leaned forward to take his cup into his scarred hands and sip from it. “...but the tea helps with that.” Ira can’t help but to crack a smile, looking at Invi through the red eyes of his unicorn mask.

Yet that smile fades quickly as he considers the weight of the decisions ahead of them. “If time taught me anything, it’s that jumping to conclusions is dangerous. But I don’t want to wait for something to happen, either. What’re we to do?" Ira goes to pinch the bridge of his nose only to find his mask in the way, pushing it up slightly.

He ends up tapping the unicorn’s snout with his nails. After giving a moment of thought, he tilts his head back slightly and to the left just enough to look at Invi with his pink-blue eyes behind his mask. It’s a whole new perspective. “Is there a point to these masks anymore?”

“Chained”

Teeth grit behind the cowl, his arms wrapped tightly to his chest under clad irons. A small silent chuckle escaped his breath before he tried to straighten his back on the ground. Really? Was their secret war to find a traitor still so desperate enough to come to this?

“Good to see you too, Invi.”

How laughable it was, that that was the case. How hilarious and wrong and heart wrenchingly painful that, though armed with a tome that revealed to its reader the literal fate of the world, though given every possible means to prevent it, still they... they were no match. No match for the steady march of fate; unstoppable, unchanging. It did not care if you knew of its design, how much one may rebel or scream or cry to the heavens. Fate bowed to no man, and it never would.

“ You’re right... “ Invi, ever the voice of wisdom. Of reason. Yet what reason was there to this, this that was to befall them all? Upon the fated land looming nigh... Of the battle soon to come... Despite all her attempts to halt it, to reroute the course of fate so as to avoid the suffering that hung like a noose around their necks, just waiting to tighten. To snap. Despite it all, it was to late... With the strike of the clock, their time had run out.

Her hands, they were fists at her side. Curled inwards, nails digging into the flesh of her palms. She could hardly bring herself to look at Invi, lest the ache within overwhelm her. “ Sometimes I wonder... would things have been different, if we had not known..? All this anger, this hate... that which makes us clash against one another... Is it fate, or because we tried to change it? “ Because they were given books detailing traitors and a war that had never deigned to cross their minds beforehand. “ No man is meant to know the fate of the world... perhaps this is our curse, then? To know, but lose ourselves along the way... “
