so anyway lets talk about the comparisons one can draw between prescott & gus and mickey & oswald and what this means and how they mirror each other and act as different paths each could take.
now im no expert but oswald in EM1 was certainly an envious character, and for good reason. he was abandoned by his creators and left in a world of the forgotten and no longer loved, he was surrounded by memorabilia and merchandise of a toon who replaced him. anyone would be upset.
but mickey had no control over this, and mickey understands the toons hatred for him. he can’t control it, but he can’t fault prescott for it either.
oswald allowed his opinions to warp his perspective on the mouse until he proved himself yada yada we all know this at this point im like. sick so excuse me if this sounds all over the place.
so yeah. Oswald in regards to Mickey started out as someone envious and angry about his situation and at someone involved in it. But he grew to understand himself and accept it, even if it stung, he accepted mickey wasn’t at fault and grew.
Now. Let’s look at Prescott.
Prescott is an envious character as well, though its not shown clearly, I always imagined with his focus on the brush he wasn’t wanting to leave Wasteland. But moreso be respected within it as a hero like Mickey and Oswald. He wanted to be loved, to be respected and maybe even feared. And it’s something that consumed him, something that caused him to be manipulated.
He was manipulated through his envy, he was warped through his envy. And through it became a villain.
Where does Gus tie into this exactly? Well, within the untranslated Graphic Novel for Epic Mickey 2. Some of Prescott’s motivation is delved into, as being he was mad at the lack of attention he received in comparison to Jamface, which Gus retorts by saying he believed Prescott was stronger than Jamface and was fine on his own. Within the game as well it’s explained a lot of his jealousy and anger arose from how he felt abandoned in a way to the gag factory, and with how Gus refused to listen to his plans.
Gus had no control over how Prescott read his actions, and Gus had no control over Prescott’s manipulation. He wasn’t aware of any of this, and is visibly hurt when its revealed that he was sabotaging and attempting all this out of Gus’ own actions. But the thing is, Gus doesn’t seem to read his own behaviour as a part of this. Perhaps he does but from how he investigated to find out why “Prescott turned out so bad”, I don’t think he’s entirely aware.
There’s a common detail with both of these duos, that being anger towards another fuelled by jealousy of some kind (usually relating to a want for love or being abandoned) and the others lack of control over the other’s rage.
Both were jealous, both were angry, and both wound up on separate paths due to it. One accepted and forgave, becoming a hero, and the other didn’t and continued downwards, becoming a villain. haha remember how oswald was originally set to be the villain in the first game hahahaha
And the other two had no control over the others feelings or how things effected them. But one understood, and the other didn’t fully.
similar situations and yet different paths.
It’s like some weird kinda look into another outcome for our main two. yknow.
