Most pigs are slaughtered at 6 months old so when these guys, (selectively bred to grow extremely large extremely quickly) are allowed to live into adulthood, their feet and hooves need special care. Smudgecake has additional challenges as he was born with extra toes on both front feet which causes him to walk a little differently. Additionally he does not respond well to sedation so it is always quite an ordeal to take care of his feet and we try not to put him through it unless absolutely necessary. Our wonderful Dr. Natalie spent time getting him sedated and all fixed up on Thursday and we are eternally grateful for her patience, kindness, and care of our large, hard to handle, patients!
