Taking screenshots on 3DS is now possible thanks to Smealum’s ____Hax 2.5 update!

Although I had a little bit of trouble figuring out how to get the 2.5 payload to work on my old3DS running 10.0.0-27U, it was all worth it once I figured it out.  So I took this screenshot (no capture card!) of my hacked shiny Lopunny that I plan on giving away for Wonder Trade Wednesday tomorrow some time on my Twitch stream.

3D Portal homebrew for the DS

While we wait for more news from the 3DS hacking front, the DS homebrew development scene continues to put out the occasional release, like this impressive prototype inspired by Portal. By the way, someone also put out a 2D Portal remake for DS several years ago, and it was pretty awesome!

The French coder behind this project, Smealum (who you might remember for  his work on the Minecraft DS project), says PortalDS is "nowhere near playable yet," but that he'll eventually add other updates including audio. You should note that the above video was shot with an emulator, so you'll see some graphical glitches not present in the actual game.

One of the biggest problems with homebrew projects for the DS or any problems, especially those run by a single person, is they're too often put aside as the developer moves on to other interests or obligations.

That's what happened to the unauthorized Minecraft DS game we've been covering, as coder Smealum has announced that he needs a break from the project:

"I just wanted to let you all know that from now on the project is officially 'on hold'. The reason for this is that I've lost all motivation to push it any further for the time being.

And this isn't really about me having school again; I've done this with pretty much all of my projects: I work hard on it for a while, and then it just kind of sits there for a few months... until I get back to it and finish it. So, don't expect any updates for a few months (at least weeks) as I won't be working on this (I haven't touched the code since version 310811).

And before anyone says I should release the source code, I want you all to know that I have considered it and decided against it for the time being. As I have said already, I do plan on releasing the source code eventually, just not before I feel I'm done with the project.

This is merely a break (hopefully) and at any rate the code is in no state to be published at this point in time. ... I hope you all understand, I'm very sorry about this."

At least there's still Lumikha/Luacraft! Oh wait, that hasn't been updated since July 25...

Homebrew coder Smealum just posted a new public update for DScraft, the unauthorized adaptation of Mojang's Minecraft for Nintendo DS. He's actually put out a number of new builds in the past several weeks, but those were available to only closed beta testers.

There's a ton of features introduced since that first public demo, including dynamic water, a dynamic lighting system, cave generation, an inventory, and more.

Now all we need are some enemy mobs! Oh, and an update for Lumikha/LuaCraft, the other homebrew  DS project obviously inspired by Minecraft, but in 2D like Terraria.
