One last method that is a little hit or miss is the missed connections section on craigslist.  Have you seen someone in town that you may or may not be interest in?  May be they saw you 2!  I haven’t personally used this method but, There are tons of missed connection ads running right now of many available men and women who have had a missed connection, and want to reconnect with that individual. Being invited to the awesome eG8 conference May 23-25, I was asked to think about proposals to make French Start ups more competitive globally, and how they could be put on the global map without resorting to relocating in the US.

Is France ever going to create a Google, a Facebook, a Twitter? 

First : there are NO French start ups of a relevant size that have become a worldwide success staying in France. We have local success stories which our media glorifies like newborn prophets but they hardly work abroad.

Starting with very successful companies built by very talented entrepreneurs but who are messiahs only in France- 

Meetic : gained EU leadership by acquiring local brands

Vente Privée : not a leader outside of FR

Free : I'm not even sure they're even in ... Belgium

Why is it that the Americans manage to impose their products globally and not one singe French web company? 

...in other sectors the French have L'Oreal, Danone, LVMH ...

Now Criteo relocated in the US, and in the 90's that's what Business Objects had to do. 

What is wrong and how to change this? the fact that the G8 countries have finally taken the full importance of the web economy and clearly put it on their agenda calls for people who will think out of the box.

There is no doubt that the absolute dominance of the US on the web is one of the biggest influential power they have on the world, now ahead of entertainment.
