Snapshot Stats: A Small Fed Follow-Up
Since this entry analyzing and critiquing the Ice Skating Association of India’s strategy with regard to international competition, the nation sent two skaters to this week’s JGP event in Poland: Nikhil Pingle, one of their more regular competitors, and Ishita Kapoor, a very young newcomer. Pingle finished last in his event, Kapoor 36th of 37 -- but both, it is very much worth acknowledging, put forward good faith technical efforts; though they have a way to go, they attempted or executed reasonable junior-level content and performed real choreography, particularly Kapoor.
And notably, on another point raised in that post, both are training outside the country -- Pingle at the Mariposa School of Skating, which has had recent success with skaters from non-skating nations, and Kapoor in Moscow.Â
Any move towards genuine growth from a small fed is worth celebrating, and a much more heartening demonstration of sportsmanship than submitting underprepared athletes -- and it puts the lie to any claim that small, non-winter sport-oriented nations simply can’t do better than that. Â
Thoughts on smaller federations, are they worth watching when their best skaters have the same level as the 77th americas best?
Seeing as I’m from a smaller federation…
1) there are only 2 American men who can contend with the worlds best
2) the current world champion is from a smaller federation
3) Europe and Asia dominate figure skating at the momentÂ
4) Australia’s top skater (men’s) scored 225.84 at Nationals, The US men’s nationals 10th place skater scored 225.85
5) an Australian pair’s team qualified for the junior grand prix final and won gold at one of the grand prix series events
tl;dr if you’re going to compare, America isn’t the federation to compare to unless you’re looking at Ice Dance and I am a slightly offended by the question as a small fed skater but like I get where you’re coming because America and the other big feds do dominate so much.
But yeah it’s definitely worth watching small fed skaters and here are a few to watch: Chloe Ing (Singapore), Michael Christian Martinez (Philippines), Javier Fernandez (Spain) etc.
When i was talking about being americas 77th best, i tried to speak about 3rd world feds, you know those who have ices rinks since the 90's and their juniors have low tes, sorry it hurted ya
Even countries with barely any ice rinks can produce wonderful skaters, and again, it is not necessarily about the score a skater can get, it’s about who they are, how they skate, their story and their drive and everything that has gone into getting them even on the international stage.Â
I personally love watching skaters from virtually non-existent or really small federations because the fact that they don’t have as much support to get them to the international circuit but they still manage to get there so inspirational and incredible and they can definitely be ones to watch out for.
