I wonder what Sasha, Alena, Anna and other young Eteri girls think, when they see this happening? Do they think they’re going to be different or do they think that they too have a year or two before someone younger comes to seniors and takes their place at the top? I wonder what kind of conversations are going around at that rink. Obviously we don’t know what’s happening in private and I’ll admit that I don’t that much about FS or it’s history yet. But when you see that an olympic champion is being pushed to retire at 17 isn’t that scary? I hope Alina manages to change coaches if she wishes to continue skating and I wish all the girls to be healthy and have long careers

I think when you’re very young, you don’t have as much self-awareness of these things.  Maybe they think that they will need to retire at 18 or 19, but feel like that is a lifetime away or that it’s an ‘old’ age.

There's a jarring contrast between what's going on with Alina, and then Liza coming up with a quad combo in her twenties at the same time. I hold out hope all of these girls will keep competing for a long time, but sadly Liza is both the outlier in Russian ladies skating and not quite at the top so who knows. I do wonder about the mindset the 3A have on their competitive futures.
