Food for Forty || Brie & Maddy
Brie was a little annoyed that she was subject to community service for some stupid parties and nights out that other St. Mary's students did. If she'd participated in the rule breaking, at least, then the punishment would be justified but when Headmaster Stone said everyone had to do it, she knew that everyone had to do it. So, she looked up her partner online and sent her a message so they could coordinate their service. She'd even consulted her Aunt Michelle, who works in admissions, for ideas of what to do. Aunt Michelle suggested working a shift at the community soup kitchen which wasn't too far off campus and even offered to give Brie and Maddy a ride there.
And that's how the two girls found themselves in threadbare aprons with shower-cap looking hairnets standing in the basement of a church. "Aunt Michelle didn't mention all of this," Brie groaned as she tied the apron bow behind her back for the third time already. "Sorry about that," she said quietly to the senior. Brie paused for a moment and looked around the room, trying to get an idea of what their next six hours of serving food would be like.
To her surprise, the room wasn't full of homeless old men like they always are in movies and shows. There were a handful of teenagers, some families with young children, and a handful of clean looking elderly folks who smiled and waved as they passed by. It was both cheerier and more depressing than she expected and she tried to put on a smile for the benefit of everyone else. The volunteer supervisor had put them behind the buffet line and said that their job was simple--Brie had to offer a scoop of mac & cheese to every plate that went down the line and Maddy handed out utensils. It seemed easy enough. When they were done, part of their service was to sit down with the recipients and get to know them a little better and Brie was anxious for it, interested in their stories but worried they wouldn't take her seriously. She wondered what Maddy thought of it all--she had stayed rather quiet during the ride, and Brie wondered if she was upset that they were paired together.
