South Africa’a tour of Sri Lanka is finally over. South Africa lost the Test series 0-2 and the one-off T20 match (lowest ever total), but won the ODI series 3-2 after being up 3-0. SA also scored some of their lowest ever totals in the Test matches, and proved they still have very little to no idea about spin. Faf got injured again, and SA lost all matches with stand-in captains Quinton and JP. Concerns continue about the form of Hashim Amla and David Miller, and Aiden Markram had a terrible tour. SA’s next tour is v Zimbabwe at home in late September (Faf will likely still be injured).

With the series already won, it is significant that Quinton de Kock was chosen above other candidates in the current squad. It is, perhaps, a peep into the post-2019 World Cup future
Quinton de Kock does not immediately come across as a leader or a deep thinker or anything other than incredibly instinctive. However, it is that natural cricketing nous that has seen him elevated to South Africa's stand-in captain for the remaining two ODIs against Sri Lanka.
Broadly speaking, with the series already won and the opposition barely proving a challenge, it should not matter much who captains South Africa but it is significant that de Kock was chosen above other candidates in the current squad. It is, perhaps, a peep into the post-2019 World Cup future.

Quinton de Kock will be the captain for the final two ODIs v Sri Lanka in the absence of injured Faf. JP Duminy will captain the only T20 game. SA’s next series is v Zimbabwe at the end of September.
SA lead the 5 match ODI series with Sri Lanka 3-0 with 2 games to play. On ODI debut Reeza Hendricks scored 102 to lead SA to 7/363 (Duminy 92), with SL bowled out for 285. Faf left the field with a possible shoulder injury and Quinton de Kock led the side for the first time. The 4th ODI is on Wednesday in Kandy.
