#slowhello

Now that the album was out, I have to do the launch poster. I made the Ang Bandang Shirley launch poster for Halloween and I’m doing the Slow Hello poster for a November release. Maybe it has something to do with them creepies.

So I gave the band studies for the poster. Take note, the keyword here is CONSISTENCY. My protagonist takes a peek-a-boo on the first one. The second one was a merging of both, which I envisioned to be like the poster for “Ang Nawawala” (HA! I thought of it first!). And as the third study says, it is a cage-like head of the girl. The idea captivated the band, so I did a better study.

Vectored the thing to have that Small Stakes (Silkscreen Poster makers) vibe. And am happy with the results.

And I guess, it fancied others too.

It’s the anniversary of Slow Hello’s album launch, so might as well show you some behind the scenes.

After we were done with the funding campaign shirt, I was given a first peek at the album. With what I’ve heard (around 4 roughs), I already have some ideas floating around, and with the leniency of the schedule, I already made clean sketches of the studies. Each one has a story.

I really like study 1. It says Europop wanting to disguise as Asian sound. Study 3 is flat out Audio Baby. I wanted to go really retro with this one. Note the Foo Fighteresque space gun. Upon deliberation with the band, they chose study 3, which takes off from where the shirt study came from.

I already made color studies for this, apart from the two you see above. But the band preferred the monotone style for their look. I tried to put more color on the layout.

Green is not their shade. Changed it to a more earthy tone.

Laying out the lyric sheet was the easiest task since my day job deals with creating brochures and newsletters.

Flashback Friday!

3 years ago, I was approached by my friend Selena if I could do a shirt design for her new band, Slow Hello. I always say sure right away to a client who will give me the creative freedom, the elbow room to do what I feel like.

Without a clue as to what they sound like, I just started doodling. I like the Walt Disney font that I tried emulating it on paper. Then I scanned it so I could vector the hell out of it. It really didn’t capture the “band-ness” of Slow Hello, so I scrapped that and went back to that sketch. I was starting to detail the wiggly letters and an idea came to mind.

“The early bird catches the worm”. The Slow worm. So I came up with a sketch of a bird and was watching Dr. Who when I did it, so I had to put the fez on there.

Next thing you know I was coloring it screenprint-style. I showed it to Selena and I was happy it was done in one take. Turns out, the shirt design was part of a project to fund their album recording. I didn’t know it was part of something big. Until now, I know I enjoyed doing the design, but had I known, I could have done a better job at it.
