hey -- i saw ur deshittification post and found it super helpful but was curious -- why not just delete all these folders that seem to be bloating up my computer?
Mostly just bc you basically cant, I think. It's all baked in and stops you at every turn.
Windows Edge is fundamentally built into the operating system in a way that makes it so you like, GENUINELY cannot delete it at all whatsoever because it wont let you and because it'll fuck things up wildly.
Killer, too. It's an intel company now, I assume after a merger, so to get use out of it they just... Shove it everywhere.
Microsoft's goal is to make money more than it is to give you a good user experience, tho yes, a huge chunk of their choices are genuinely unbelievably questionable.
Tangentially related, but usually if something comes to you for free, you're the product, as they say. The amount of data that can be scraped and sold through people just using ai is frankly ridiculous, especially since people don't see it as directly and therefore arent on guard nearly as much.
Take the thing where windows AI Recall 'takes pictures of everything you're doing, so you can look back and find what you were doing previously and even use an ai to summarize things in the past. Locally stored, of course'. Like that... The ai's database cannot be locally stored, the data must be fed to the ai to train it which means it *is* leaving your computer, and very many people would be so happy to buy the knowledge of everything you do ever! Ignoring the hippa violations and data leaks and the overwhelming user backlash, they rolled it out anyway. And now AI is a core part of your operating system.
Or Killer, which is a network analytic service. It takes the data of your wifi usage and stats and analyzes it. So... More money for sellable data from you!! <3
They're not gonna just let you get rid of systems like that, especially not ones that could make them a ton of money and doubly especially not ones that they've already spent money on, which is why it's borderline impossible to delete this shit wholesale.
ALSO THANK YOU!!!! Knowledge is at its best when shared :3
I know it's a lot to ask of Windows, but I'd really appreciate it if when I selected something in a cell in Excel and pressed the Copy shortcut, the contents of that cell would actually go into my clipboard. I just think it'd be a really useful feature.
