watching a video explaining why hollow knight was such a successful modern metroidvania. makes me think about how if someone asked us why we like hk the answer would probably be more specific and different from a lot of people?
a lot of games we latch onto are heavily story driven. not exclusively of course but when you look at our general favorites its like undertale, in stars and time, the pokemon mystery dungeon series, you get the picture.
hollow knight was defenetly more loose on that than we expected based on how invested the fandom is in the lore. in fact we didnt even know it was a metroidvania when we got the game. but what works for us about it is that hk feels like youre experiencing your own story of sorts?
hk doesnt have a tightly written story where youre recieving every piece of notable information like a lot of the games we love. its more about the small moments and how they make you feel.
it works fantastically for ghost, a character who we think has its personhood and autonomy proven partially by the players own investement in the world and compassion towards the characters. and while we didnt find silksong as enjoyable, our lifeblog still included a lot of posts where we'd just comment on shit and talk about how aspects of the game made us feel and think.
