So I have been seeing a lot of posts lately about Mr. Green that focus on two things: His books and his behaviors. Firstly I would like to say I absolutely despise his work. I think its childish, that it panders to this idea our generation has formed that we are all special snowflakes and that it panders far too much to the younger crowd. While I understand his intention is to give us ‘different’ people a character design to relate to, I cannot find it in myself to take any of his female characters seriously when they are all the same and all he does  is write them in with the ‘she is different from all the other girls’ archetype. It is something I see more and more with authors like him, and I find it almost insulting that he calls himself a writer that panders to a crowd who need someone to relate to. Pandering to the special snowflake generation does not a good writer make. As an example, we will take his most famous novel. The Fault In Our Stars. I will admit, despite the familiar archetype used to describe Hazel Grace, Green intelligently focuses on a real issue within our world (surprising I know) and I found myself liking this young girl. Teenagers with cancer and the struggles they deal with is a real issue often ignored in our world, just like any diseases. He even cleverly focuses on how our idols and those we look up to are only humans themselves and often are just as disgusting and horrible as anyone in the world around us. However, the romance in the novel is cheap and quite frankly pathetic. When reading the novel I found myself more and more disgusted by this growing relationship, because it simply fit too closely with so many other romances I have read in teenage novels. I found it childish and I found more and more that I disliked the characters that I had before enjoyed because the author focused too much on how the relationship was growing and now how the characters were. In fact the only character I even slightly enjoyed because he was real to me was Issac, he actually seemed human in this book rather than a construct of the authors mind. Things felt unnatural and forced (which to me is not what a novel should be like), felt rushed and was almost painful to read after a certain point. Especially the ending, I found it almost ridiculous with the way the story had been written so far that Augustus died instead of Hazel Grace. Had the main character died I would have been FAR more devastated and far more impressed by the author and would even recommend this book to others despite its other outstanding flaws. Its interesting how Green would focus on certain things and then completely move away from his intentions, I get that maybe he wanted a ‘plot twist’ of sorts but I just felt almost insulted by the ending and felt he could have done SO SO much better with not only the book overall but also with the ending itself. However, outside of his novels, I find he has some excellent and appealing opinions and I absolutely adore his history talks and other such things. I think he definitely has the right idea in real life opinions and I agree a lot with him. I think he simply doesn’t quite yet understand how to make a properly express himself through his characters and I imagine he himself might know this and wishes to grow outside of it. But I digress, on the point of Mr. Green’s behavior as a whole. A lot of Tumblr is accusing him of having a thing for younger girls which to them would somehow explain his desire to pander to the teenagers he panders too and I find it disgusting and shameful of this website. The man is expressing himself, and while I disagree with how he does so, I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would dare accuse the man of sexual misconduct and abuse when he simply writes. As he has addressed in a post before it takes away from the seriousness of the issue and it simply is deeming to his character simply because someone doesnt like his work. As a person I like Mr. Green, as a writer, I find him week at best. But dont you dare call him a pedophile, and dont you dare accuse him of sexual assualt.
