I think it would be a good AU, though in my head, Thorunn was always the one for Bjorn and he never really got over her since she was his first love and all that and I like that their romance is full of angst. I want to believe that they can be happy and work past their issues (such as Siggy’s custody, Bjorn’s parents’ disapproval of their union, Thorunn’s insecurities as to her legitimacy as a shieldmaiden and the power imbalance between them...) In my head, Thorunn has always been very free-spirited. She has agency and doesn’t want to yield it, and even as a slave she did not want to yield it because that was the last thing she had and I feel like Bjorn was trying to get her to relinquish said agency over being his wife and the mother to their daughter, hence, I believe some resentment on Thorunn’s part towards Bjorn. I believe Thorunn left because she wanted to be free but also flee her insecurities and the pressure she was under. I believe she refused to be a slave of another sort but deeply regrets abandoning her daughter. So I think such AU would be fine but one that takes into account Thorunn’s issues and really delves into the power imbalance between them. Also, I headcanon that Siggy being relatively the same age as Sigurd, Ivar, and Angrboda, they are raised together, fostered in Aslaug’s hall, getting into all kinds of mischief.
