Cool idea that just popped into my head for ABSOLUTELY no reason at all: wouldn’t it be great if, instead of using queerness to pink wash cultural imperialism, westerners dedicated more time to exploring the queer history of cultures said imperialism is currently trying to destroy? Anyway, here are two Ukrainian songs with wlw themes to listen to instead of “All the things she said” by t.A.T.u (who 1) still perform in Russia, including the occupied territories; 2) have ties with a pro-Putin party United Russia, and YET are still having everyone in a chokehold because of Heated Rivalry):
1) «Цілувати дівок» («To kiss girls») by Anastymoza)
Some of the lyrics translated:
“A dream came true where it shouldn’t have,
Wings flutttered only just above the ground,
I got to kiss girls,
I got to kiss girls,
To kiss girls”
2) «Цукор» («Sugar») by Skryabin
Some of the lyrics translated:
«They are like sugar — her and her,
Dancing together — her and her,
They are like sugar — her and her,
They will be okay — her and her”
(I want to add personal commentary here that, even though this one is sang by a man, it feels unusually respectful? Like, some of the other lyrics before this chorus do highlight how the two women are wanted by everyone at the function but, in context, it sounds more like a device to contrast with how little it matters to them because they only have eyes for each other. Which is in contrast to how some men just go “haha, isn’t it hot when two women make out for MY enjoyment haha”)
