TOEFL Structure Skill 1 & 2
The following meme says, “Today lunch was free False you lost money eating lunch instead of working.” This is definitely true in so many ways. When a person is at work, that individual typically work for 7-8 hours a day, including time for lunch. Whenever a person gets and eats lunch, we do not think about what we lose. We are only paying attention in that moment of what we are gaining which is pleasing ourselves and fulfilling our wants, instead of paying attention and realizing what we are actually losing which it that particular amount of work that we could be paid for.
Another concept that this meme demonstrates is that when something says that it is free, it usually isn’t. I know for me, whenever I want to get something and it says that it is for free I am just like yes, something that is actually free. But for most of the time, it really isn’t; usually I would have to buy something or always do something in return in order to get that product or service for free. I honestly do get a little frustrated because it just allows me to realize that nothing in our society is really free and that is always something that is wanted.
This relates to the concept of supply and demand. This idea is when the amount of a certain product or service is available which then attracts buyers who are interested in it. Of course all of us are highly interested in having anything free, especially if it has to do with food and not spending any amount of money. But since we only want to fully satisfy our needs in that exact moment, we don’t get to have time to think about what the consequences could be whether they are good or bad. In this example, the consequence would be that since we took the time off to have a lunch that recall is “free,” it really is not because we are making it up for the lost time from working, which sort of sucks. Personally, I wouldn’t want to have a free lunch if it would affect me in the long run by not getting paid for working, as a result it would multi-task in this scenario. So I think that this meme is pretty accurate with what I agree on.
