have you seen this man?
now you have.
tfw you finally start serious work on the Big One (story) and actually realize how much of a tonal whiplash it is from everything else you have ever created. oh boy.
just today i realized its probably in the “horror” category. and for years ive actively avoided writing for it because of how depressingly heavy handed the mental health themes are and how it put my own brain-space at its worst to write damaged characters. but now i am strong enough to do it. so.
your thoughts on reading the most horrible imaginable set of events for likeable characters? skeletons are involved.
your opinion on stories written as cruelly as possible:
it can be too much
as long as there’s a theme of hope
cruel? you better follow through here. you better make it hurt.
Maria, who was accidentally made into an immortal soldier of heaven at the young age of 7 over 1,000 years ago.
She hides her skeleton under layers and layers of intricately knit wools and can float/control wool as if it were her flesh. (skeleton knights are gifted a “second flesh” by paloma to represent their status but also serve as a means for the knights to use as weaponry. Paloma attuned Maria to wool, seeing that she was a child, in a cruel attempt to hinder her abilities. It backfired somewhat and now Maria is her #1 murder bitch.)
Maria is the leader of the Skeletal Knights and is extremely skilled with her use of wool as well as her attunement with light/thought, gifted to her by a different god. (typically knights earn a second attunement from one of the 3 other gods.) She is able to read active thought and sense emotion. She cannot dive into the brain and memories of someone’s mind. She CAN trick the mind and produce visual illusion however. These skills are also extremely refined.
Maria was one of the two first characters I designed for the skeleton world (the other being Taxer, design pending, post pending) and is vital to the how the plot develops. The circumstances of her enlistment were accidental and especially traumatizing to a child. She’s a unique case compared to other knights as her brain was never able to fully mature before transforming meaning she is more susceptible to her emotions and has a stunted understanding of the full range of human emotion. She is dedicated to her personal goals above all else, and aspires for nothing but the completion of said goals.

* same. only the bad thing probably already happened and i just don’t remember it yet. hello paranoia my old friend.
* i hate to have to think. ♫
* i hate feeling too. ♫
* i’ll leave those chores to some pathetic sap like you. ♫
* heh.
* why are people immediately assuming you're going to wreck shop with this? jesus christ
* dunno bud. i mean, i guess i can’t blame anybody for automatically assuming that nothing good can come of anything anybody does and everything is awful but they could at least pretend to believe in me a little bit.
* oh, sure, everybody believes in you as long as you sit back and look like a misunderstood victim of circumstance but the moment you start taking charge of your own horrible fate it’s all “you’re a hypocrite” and “you look horrible” and “think about what you’re doing”.
* i’ve had years to think and i was a horrible hypocrite to begin with, nerds. am i right or am i right?
