CRUMBLE  ONLY  WHEN  I  HOLD  YOU,   MY  FRIEND   —   midnight  comes  with  edan  and  gideon  pulls  him  into  his  arms.     it  must  be  hard  to  keep  all  of  that  grief  in  one  body,   so  he  gives  it  another  place  to  go.     sometimes  he  is  angry,   to  feel  this  hum  of  sadness.     sometimes  he  is  angry,   mending  these  wounds.     sometimes  he  is  angry  that  edan  hasn’t  only  ever  known  the  sun.     he  rubs  his  back  with  his  palm  and  they  stay  like  statues,   with  the  door  to  his  apartment  wide-open,  until  they're  ready  to  live  again.

this  morning  there’s  snow  everywhere  and  it’s  as  if  edan  is  writing  to  him  from  his  window.     hey,   sleepyhead.     he  smiles  at  the  blinding  landscape,   wind  howling  against  the  glass.     in  the  sound,   he  can  hear  his  mother’s  kettle.   he  can  smell  christmas  and  the  hot  cocoa  that  always  burned  his  tongue.     there’s  a  million  reasons  to  love  this  time  of  year  and  now  he  has  a  million  and  one   —   the  change  of  season  has  brought  him  closer  to  another  heart.    

 “when i started taking pictures of couples—”   he  says  to  this  heart  a  little  later  that  day,   as  they  sit  on  a  frosted  bench  in  central  park.     “—someone  told  me  what  was  significant  about  my  work  wasn’t  the  fact  that  there  were  two  men  in  the  picture  but  the  emotion  you  could  feel.   because  i  was  just  capturing  love,   not  gay  love.     you  know,   fuck  that.     it  is  gay  love.    that’s  what  i  photograph  and  it’s  important.”
