I think the secret reason Kunze's later musicals don't do as well is because he stopped raving and bitching (/pos). like the sheer desperate annoyance at hypocrisy and the meaninglessness of ideals in [west german] society and the european system at large is Aggressively present in elisabeth/tdv/mozart... nice and crunchy...
(elisabeth is "nobody has anything worthwhile to say and people who do think outside the box get mowed down by the system as well as by mundane evils"; mozart is "look, even being a celebrity cult icon (as idealised in times past and present) sucks"; tdv is "rationality doesn't exist and love will always rot from the inside, in the end there's only greed")
