Another nightmare, an affiliation the others in Siyu's creche had often made fun of her for. Her arms were restrained, mouth held shut by the ghaiks foul manipulation of her mind and body. Internally she was screaming, slinging spells, slicing her blade clean through the enemies bulging, pulsating brains. In actuality she could only watch as they held the tadpole to her eye, only feel as it eagerly lunged into her socket and made its way deep into her cerebral tissue. A common nightmare, the fear and shame soon to be washed away by the milky light of morning. Fears of a potential future manifested in her mind at rest; the fuel that drove her blades every day in training. Today would be a strong day. All she had to do was open her eyes.
The world was a red blur, her lids heavy from sleep. She wondered if one of the other initiates had pranked her during the night. She rubbed her eyes before opening them again. The scene was the same as her nightmare, only now it was all tinted red - as if there was a film over her eyes. No, not her eyes - less than an arms-length above her there was a sheet of uncomfortably warm red glass. She was trapped.
"Tsk'va! This can't be happening." Her voice felt raspy, as if she had been yelling before. She squeezed her eyes shut, tight as she could manage, before opening them again, and again, and again...
The same crimson bathed horrors stared back at her each time. A gh'ath. A ghaik war vessel. She took a brief account of her body, thorough as she could be in the cramped space. Bruised knuckles, minor cuts, persistent headache. She shut her eyes again, this time to survey her situation. She could hear the faint hum of the ship's biomachinery, whooshing adrenaline in her ears, the crackle of nearby fire, and faintly in the background the sounds of a battle raging.
Follow the sounds of battle, find Sarth Zarra; she will rally our troops and we will fly home victors. The pounding behind her eye was competing with every thought swimming around her skull. Not the only thing swimming up there. Shame coursed through her, burning hot across her skin. She would never hear the end of this, captured and infected on her first mission. Was she even worthy of the purification the zaith'isk would bring? It was known that all who become infected were promised purification, but how easy it would be to eliminate her with a slip of the blade and claim she had fallen in battle. She pictured herself, deep crimson flowing from her throat, grey eyes gazing unseeingly at the nightmare that would become her grave. All that she was - snuffed out in an instant, dying and never soaring among the astral.
A distant scream interrupted her ruminating, she had to move before those nightmares became real as well. She called out to the stars and felt the familiar magic begin to well in her hands, but it felt subdued; like a stars light dimming before collapse. With a burst of resolve she struck out against the red glass and with an unnatural squelching sound, it burst open. The room was ablaze with dragon fire, even the air was hot as the hells raging below the ship. She shook off the uncertainty clouding her resolve, her body was trained for this. She deftly slipped from the would-be coffin and made her way to the door, making sure to time her footsteps with the thudding machinery should any thralls be hidden nearby. The next room was empty of any living creatures, save for a weakened brain she quickly culled.
The smell of sulfur and smoke crowded in on the piercing ache in her skull, quickening her step and heightening her resolve to end this nightmare with silver bloodshed and be cleansed. Now that she had a direction her body moved easily, with all the precsion she had spent years honing. Her feet traced the patterns of the desiccated skin floors, steps sure as if she was on the mountainous terrain near where she was raised.
The sounds of battle grew louder as she approached the exit, sword clashes punctuated by the beating of a dragon's wings. As she finally broke free of the walls her eyes flitted to the skies in search of the dragon and it's rider. She saw the great red beast soar overhead, spewing fire through the roof the wretched gh'ath. Underneath the dragon a githyanki woman was somersaulting through the air, blade poised to attack. Siyu's eyes quickly darted back to the deck where she stood, scanning for the creature about to meet it's doom.
"ABOMINATION!" She heard the woman shout, "This is your end." Her voice was steely with conviction as she landed before Siyu, blade pointed right to her heart. She meant to kill her like the very ghaik they hunted. Visions from before came rushing back into her mind - the silver blood she dreamed of spilling turned to deep red, the starlight in her dimming, her lifeless body falling deep into the hells.....
No! She will not be unmade. Anger flashed through her, flooding out any relief at the sight of another gith. She stood tall and raised her gaze to meet that of her attacker.
"I am Siyu of Creche Therai, I am no abominaARUGH." The retort hot on her lips had turned into an exclamation of surprise and pain.
The ever present pain behind her eye had suddenly surged upon making eye contact with the other woman, almost as if the ilithid tadpole within her was desperate to jump hosts. It was as if a thousand stars were meeting their end all within the confines of her skull. Gravity felt magnified, her knees buckled under the unexpected weight. She forced her eyes open through the pain, wanting to meet the woman's eyes as she slew her in this moment of weakness. A feeling of disorientation swept over her as she stared defiantly up into her own grey eyes. She saw her own pale blonde hair whipping in the hellish breeze and the carefully polished gold adornments on her armor that marked her as a member of the circle, all so familiar to her normally. It looked so different, as if she hadn't spent her whole lifetime coming to know those features.
What vile trick of the mind was this? The repulsive ghaik monster squirming just behind her eye was digging around in her mind, able to see all of her hopes and fears - able to project them to other infected, to this hostile woman. Her vision reduced to a pinpoint as the pain retreated to the expected ache and she was herself again, staring at the brown-haired gith standing above her. The other githyanki's face also wore a look of pain, though she remained upright. She sheathed her blade and stepped back, leaving Siyu room to stand. Her movements were sharp and measured, even though she no longer saw Siyu as a threat every muscle was tensed to snap into battle at any moment.
"G'hel'zor. Brainfire brought on by the ghaik tadpoles." The woman's voice was laced with a disgust mirroring Siyu's own, but slightly softer now that she wasn't intent on killing her. She took a steadying breath before continuing, "You are no thrall. Vlaakith blesses me this day."
Siyu let a small sigh of relief escape, she didn't need any more enemies on this ship. The woman wore the slightest of smiles, her golden eyes guarded yet warm. Perhaps this woman was truly a blessing from Vlaakith, another child of gith to stay with her through the same waking nightmare. Guilt, white and hot, burned through her mind. Who was she to feel joy that another of Vlaakith's warriors was infected? She remembered a day early in her training, when her and her peers had first learned about ceremorphosis. Their young faces of horror and disgust were forever burned into her mind: this was the fate she shared with this woman. She should not feel relieved to share this burden. A real warrior destined for the astral would wish this upon nobody; they would bear the sin of capture alone. Still, she looked at the other woman in her silver warrior's armor and felt comforted. The strange woman's golden-flecked eyes narrowed as these thoughts rushed through Siyu's mind. She wearily wondered if the tadpole was still transmitting her thoughts. The warrior hadn't made for her blade again, so she was probably safe.
"Shkath zai." She spoke before the other woman could press her, fearful that traitorous thought may yet come to be known. "Together we may just escape this. Have you located the helm kin?" Good words for a good solider, the familiar mask slipped into place.
"I am more than capable of escape on my own; just as you should be kin." Her biting words were forged in steel, yet Siyu caught a note of wavering uncertainty, "Though I suppose as a pair we could more easily gain control of the ship." The stranger's voice was hard again, her tone informed by the mission ahead of them. "The helm lies on the level above, we strike hard and fast." She accented her words with small hand motions.
"Lead the way, how can I address you?" Had her kith'rak not taught the values of diplomacy? "Battles are often easier when you know who you stand with."
"Address me?" Her eyes widened incredulously, "You can address me when we get out of here." She leaned in before finishing, "There are no zaith'isks in Avernus, kin. Every second spent here is one more moment closer to transformation. You'd do well to stop talking and follow." She turned on the last word and set off towards the upper deck.
"Very well then," Siyu called after her, jogging to catch up, "should an imp sneak up on you I'll wait until we're safe in our bunks to call out."
She saw the other woman's back move with a sigh in response. Her annoyance brought a slight smirk to Siyu's face. As they re-entered the smoke filled halls the smirk fell, it was short lived, a brief moment of levity before returning to the nightmare. The woman's figure ahead anchored her to reality, the gleaming silver a stark reminder that this was life or death. She vowed to live.
