The dark side is overflowing with emotion — rage, grief, fear, obsession. Emperor Palpatine is basically an anger evangelist (chat, “use your anger and strike me down,” is not a call for emotional constipation), and Anakin Skywalker doesn’t fall because he stops feeling; he falls because he feels too much and can’t process it in a grounded way.

Because here’s the thing: anger and hate are emotions. Full stop. The idea that they somehow “don’t count” as real feelings — that they’re just failures of control or signs of being less evolved — that’s not coming from the text.

That’s 👏👏 the patriarchy 👏👏 talking.

It’s a cultural habit of treating certain emotions (usually the softer, more relational ones) as “real,” and others (like anger, especially when it’s directed at injustice) as something to suppress, dismiss, or delegitimize.

Anger is a completely human, even righteous response to injustice. If something is wrong, feeling angry about it isn’t the problem — it can actually be the thing that tells you your values are being violated.

So the “coldness” of the dark side isn’t about lack of emotion, but about lack of empathy.

The dark side isn’t “you feel nothing,” it’s “you stop caring about anyone but yourself (or a very narrow circle).”

It was no contest.

Your emotions don’t go away — they get turned inward. Your pain becomes the only pain that matters. Your anger becomes justification. Your fear becomes control. That’s a different kind of cold: not numbness, but a kind of moral isolation. A void where other people’s inner lives just … stop registering.

You can see that in how Sith operate. It’s not that they don’t feel, it’s that they center themselves as the only meaningful subject in the story. Other people become tools, obstacles, or extensions of their will. Even when they claim it’s for a greater good, there’s always that underlying belief: I am the one who should decide. I am the one who knows. I am the solution.

And that’s where the real warning is: not “don’t feel anger,” but “don’t let your emotions collapse your world down to just you.”

Because anger at injustice? That’s human. That can be clarifying, even necessary.

The common fandom read of the Jedi trying to suppress that entirely is ... an oversimplification and a different conversation!

But the Sith take the opposite extreme: they take anger and turn it into certainty that they alone have the right to act, to dominate, to reshape everything around them.

So the dark side as “cold” isn’t about being emotionless. It’s about becoming so consumed by your own emotions that you lose the ability — or willingness — to recognize anyone else’s.

This is how I imagine Exar Kun as a teenager, inspired by the "Mom found the yaoi" monologue. As much as Exar had admirers as an adult, I imagine him as a nerd/social outcast while younger.
