and he glances at mary once during transfiguration - and she’s biting her lip and staring and glaring at the board and twirling her quill in her fingers. he  m i s c a l c u l a t e s

and BANG the chair goes back too much and slams onto the floor

firstly, thank you so so so much for this ask!! im still in awe at how many people love blackdonald and I’m so honoured!

and okay so sirius is only two years older than regulus right? (forgive my maths if that’s wrong lol) my nephew is around two now and tbh i think even from like that age sirius would have been such a bright, happy, excited kid. I mean, imagine a curious little toddler who wants more than anything to just cuddle with his mum and show her the butterflies in the garden and to show his dad how high he can jump. But he’s used to them being distant and already before regulus he’s used to being alone.

I imagine even as a kid he still desperately wants to have their approval. He and regulus and the other cousins spend a lot of time together, but from a young age sirius knows which family members he doesn’t really like. He saves kittens and loves flowers and bumblebees. But he doesn’t really understand all of it until he’s about six or seven.

Perhaps there’s a kid down the road, a muggle child, and sirius greets him and is happy to have a friend his own age. He understands there are people with no magic, but he’s not really been talked to about it. There are countless books in the library titled blood purity and such but he’s never read them and he doesn’t know what their about. That is until his parents hear that he’s been playing with this muggle boy and when he comes back on, feeling exhilarated and happy and covered in mud because they were racing in the park.

It’s when Walburga tuts at him and grabs him by the ear and forbids him from ever seeing that filth of a boy again. Sirius is confused and shocked and he doesn’t understand. But when he hears her rambling on about mudbloods and how dirty muggles are Sirius can’t believe it. This is what his mother thinks? How? Why? He’s locked in his room for a few days as punishment and even though he’s had a pretty strict upbringing he finally understands just who his family is. He asks andromeda about it and she understands what he’s going through, and she tells him about hogwarts and how there are so many amazing witches and wizards who are muggleborn and others who have one parent a witch/wizard and the other a muggle.

Sirius knows he’s been a little different but he didn’t realise there was the absolute and blatant prejudice and he knows it’s wrong. He doesn’t hate them for it at first, he still loves them but he knows now he’s never fully going to be part of the family, and for him to think this at a young age is mind blowing tbh.

Those few years before Hogwarts he starts to get a little rebellious and by the time he’s ten he’s definitely had enough.
