Watch Yourself (Sirius/Ray) [Spy AU]
@kashimalin I know you put this in a long time back and I’ll confess that I jumped ahead on my requests to write this one because I’ve been thinking about this AU lately and how happy I am with it. I hope you enjoy!
This is for the sensory prompt list.
22. Neon lights at 1:30am.
37. The tender ache when you press against bruises.

“Honestly,” Sirius sighed, pushing Ray to sit on a ragged sofa. “You need to watch yourself better. That was too close for comfort.”
“They didn’t get me though,” Ray grumbled, hissing when Sirius dug a thumb into his shoulder. “Hey!”
“Getting away doesn’t mean a damn thing if you aren’t fit to finish the job. Watch yourself.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Shaking his head, Sirius walked over to the motel bed, flipping open his briefcase he had tossed onto it when they had first arrived in the room. He had booked it out the night before as a precaution and now he was glad he had. It was seedy, but it was secluded, especially this time of night. Pulling a first aid kit out of the briefcase, he threw it at Ray, who caught it with a wince.
“Take off your jacket and shirt.”
Ray did as instructed, though slower than Sirius. Sirius tossed his jacket onto the open case, quickly followed by his chest holster and pistols. Undoing the buttons at his wrists, he rolled up his sleeves, approaching Ray.
Crouching in front of him, Sirius sighed, taking stock of the rainbow of bruises that ran from Ray’s left shoulder to just above his beltline. Flipping the kit open, he pulled out a small container of bruise cream, slathering it between his hands and getting to work.
The first touch had Ray flinching, but he soon relaxed back against the sofa, letting Sirius take care of him with gentle strokes of his fingers on his tender skin. Watching Sirius’ face, lit by the blinking red and white neon motel sign out the window, Ray felt guiltier with each passing second. But he kept silent, not wanting to confess that he was in the wrong. Apologies wouldn’t fix a situation they were already in.
“Hey,” Sirius said, breaking Ray’s train of thought. Sirius was wiping his hands clean on a cloth, waiting to continue until Ray looked him in the eye. “Remember, we have somebody waiting at home for us. Don’t go sacrificing yourself to protect me again. I’m entirely capable of taking care of myself.”
Grimacing, Ray nodded. “I’ll do my best.”
“I suppose I’d have a hard time asking for more.” Sirius began to unbutton his shirt as he walked back toward the bed. “Come on, let’s get an hour of rest before we go back to HQ. We’ll have to report our findings and take this thing in for examination.” He gestured with a sniff at the unconscious and bound man they had propped in the corner. “I know how much you hate paperwork and it’ll be good to get it done sooner than later.”
Ray grumbled, forcing himself to his feet. “Alright. But I’m not happy about it.”
“Nobody to blame but yourself on that one. Simple get in, get out, my ass.”
Ray finally gave him a grin. “It was fun though.”
Sirius gave a low chuckle, sitting back against the headboard. “I suppose it was. Now come here and rest, you’re exhausted. I’ll wake you when it’s time to go.”
Sitting next to Sirius, Ray leaned up against him, getting comfortable. He fell asleep quickly, all his trust in Sirius and all his thoughts on their special someone who was waiting for them to return home when this job was over.
