Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 11: Zen Garden)

The Finchwick kidnapping incident was followed by meetings, press conferences and more meetings. Nobody even remotely involved in the event was able to find more than moment to themselves for the rest of the month.

One afternoon Amadeus & friends sneaked away to Zen Garden.

Tina: “Say, is that river swimable?”

Amadeus: “In fact, yes!”

Tina: “Cool! Brb!”

Zen Garden: <<<TinaChen logged out>>>

Daniel: “Tina...?”

Daniel: “One moment she says she wants to take a swim, then she disappears?”

Gavin: “Someone in meatspace will have noticed that we made off with the VR helmets. But if they want me to return for yet another pointless discussion, then they’ll have to unplug me Matrix style!”

Amadeus: “I don’t think it’s anything of that sort. Tina just went to change her avatar - I should, too.”

Zen Garden: <<<AmadeusStern logged out>>>

Gavin: “Aaaaand, they left us to ourselves. Totally not suspicious.”

Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 11: Zen Garden) 

In the end, stepping into the middle of the town square to relay the news from Detroit is good enough to make the townspeople forgive Daniel, if only for just that day. On the same account Mike’s reveal as an android, too, gets overshadowed by the scope of those news:

The dirty bomb would get defused, the “human reservation” disbanded, the hostages could return home...

Wolfgang: “...and Daniel told us all of this just like that! I bet the president wanted to turn the announcement into a big show, but that scrawny PL600 just took the glory for itself! Gotta love that ma... uh, mom? Detective Collins?!”

Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 11: Zen Garden)

Gavin and Daniel are back where it all began: The little suburb of Finchwick.

Returning home is an important part of adventure stories, it should illustrate the characters’ growth, and make them feel that their hardships have been worth it, because their loved ones are save, and the world they came from is free of threats (even though the heroes themselves might not fit in entirely anymore).

In Gavin’s and Daniel’s case, right now they’d prefered to be in the cell in CyberLife tower again.

Gavin: “Do you still own the entirety of this dump?”

Daniel: “You bet! And now that the political climate is changing, I can finally start to seriously develop this place. That stupid military base in the Bramblewood needs to go first!”

Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 10: Amanda)

Amanda-hologram: “It has been brought to my attention that you, Mr. Reed, are currently in possession of the detonator to the infamous dirty bomb President Manfred stationed in Finchwick, but that is now aimed at Detroit city hall.

Without further ado, I want it! Consider it payment for my help and the new positions you and your friends will be holding at my company soon!”

Gavin: “So that’s why you were so eager to aid us. Because Nines naively spilled the beans to one he believed he could trust like a mother. When in truth it was just another digital piece of shit!”

Amanda: “Amadeus already called me something similar, there’s no need to go there again. We searched the changing rooms just now, but found nothing. So you have the detonator on you. Hand it over!”

Gavin: “The hell I will! There are still humans in Detroit. If the bomb goes off, they’ll all die. That’s exactly why we didn’t use the bomb as leverage against Markus, but instead entered into the deal with you!”

Amanda: “I don’t have such qualms, Chief Marketing Officer Reed. Now hand over the detonator or my guards will take it by force!

One way or another, I will get what I want. But there is only one road where you, too, will get what you crave.”

Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 9: Siege at the DPD)

Daniel: “Don’t shoot the messenger who comes with bad news, but... North escaped. And a squad bearing Jericho’s coat of arms is closing in on the DPD.”

Gavin: “Oh my god, you’re looking like a CyberLife sunday sale! Adorable!”

Daniel: “I raced over here to save your bacon, so of course I didn’t bother with setting up a proper avatar. But Zen Garden can read an android’s digital signature and then assigns them an avatar based on their model. Same as it caught on the fact that Officer Chen is a werewolf. - Wait, Chen, you’re a werewolf?!”

Tina: “I’m a what?”

Gavin: “That’s not a werewolf, but a heavy built canine furry pirate (AGI-3/STR+3). You’d known that, had you been at the briefing. But of course you felt like skipping that...”

Daniel: “I was locked up in a cell!”

Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 10: Amanda)

Sure enough not just Tina, but Jin, too, wait at a folding table. They do not look particularly happy, but at least undamaged - what is not the same as unharmed. On a quick glance Gavin cannot tell whether Tina is under the influence of a sedative or in an extreme state of social anxiety, but in any case she is far from well.

Jin raises his head when the familiar adults enter. He notices the blue stains on his father’s pullover, but doesn’t make the connection to them being android blood. Dad is a detective, he catches criminals, so his clothes getting dirty is to be expected. Besides, Gavin is wearing Daniel’s top and the other way around Daniel wears dad’s. Swapping clothes with other kids is a fun game, as Jin knows from experience. Apparently Daniel and his father were having fun, while his mother had sat in that boring meeting for her new job, so everything is alright.

Jin is afraid, as any kid would be in an unfamiliar situation with parents vanishing alongside strangers and dropping back again on irregular intervals. But the boy tells himself that there’s nothing to fear here objectively (a weird adult word that means “for real”).

Jin: “Eat now!”

Dale: “Yes, soon. As soon as your dad has answered a few questions. About the remote control that we lost and he found. Remember?”

Gavin: “I wouldn’t know of any remote control.”

Jin: “You should ask the hologram lady to buy you a new remote. She’s rich!”

Dale: “Oh, is she?”

Jin: “Yes, filthy rich! But also nice. She invited us all to her splashy park. Now we eaaaaaat!”

Dale: “Still don’t know of any “remote control”, Reed?”

Gavin: “Nope. Except if you mean the CyberLife app. Comes for free with the purchase of any android and reliably shuts the buggers off.”

Jin: “Eaaaat now...”

Dale: “We eat when your dad has told us where he hid the detonator, not a moment earlier!!! RA9 in heaven, Detective, until now this was all business, but NOW I’m REALLY fed up with you! What kind of father lets his child starve?!”

Chip: “Maybe the boy isn’t his...”

Dale: “Oh, good catch!”

Chip: “I bet it’s Daniel’s! That would explain why Jin is able to talk in full sentences!”

Finchwick: Become Human (Chapter 5: Waiting for Connor)

Amadeus: “Connor, I... there’s a myriad of things I want to say, and I also kinda want to kick myself for just having said “myriad”, and everything is messed up inside me, so...”

Amadeus: *SMOOCH!*

Tina: “Wanna talk about it, Con’? I’m good at pretending to listen.”

Amadeus (internally): Yay! After I snogged his nemesis, Connor will drop me like a hot potatoe, no more father-son pretensions! I’m finally free! Well, that was the plan, but, man, kissing really is something! Haha! Horny teenage milestone achieved! I wonder what girl lips would feel like in comparison?
