Hello and long time no see!
As some of you may recall I was working on a translation of the text inside Salazar Slytherin's book that Sebastian Sallow is reading. You can see the wonderful screenshots that started it all here from @hogwartslegacypics and I have some long overdue updates for you.
Unfortunately the latin text used inside the book is placeholder/filler text that does not have any meaning towards the game/world of Harry Potter. The designers used this text as a texture to fill the pages, which I knew was the most likely outcome (but a girl can dream!).
That being said the text in the book may have some verses sampled from what is known as the Aeneid. This phrase "Class patent taciti sociosqu ad liter torrent per connubial nostra per incepts himenaeos" which is seen in Salazar's book is apparently derived from the Aenid. Also there are key phrases such as "aliquet" and "maecenas" that are frequently seen in Latin text generators. This information was given to me from a lovely redditor in the Latin translation community, but they have since deleted their reply so I will not be citing them publicly. Ty redditor you know who you are <3. Although this is slightly disappointing lore wise, I don't believe this will stop me from trying to decipher others. As many have stated there are notes from Isidora on the walls of the Undercroft that seem meaningful. It was a blast trying to decipher the script to figure out the text, and once I have finished transcribing the hard to read cursive into all the correct latin phrases I actually plan on making high-res recreations of the book pages! That way we can have them for our fandom, so please keep an eye out for those.
