AUDIO INSPIRATION: NEBULA DRIFT by Simon Wilkinson
*NOTE: This is a sampling of the longer piece which runs a whopping 23 minutes long! If you liked what you heard, please be sure to support the artist and purchase the full version at www.thebluemask.com/shop
There is something that has always attracted me to ambient music. When done well, it provides you with a unique sense of smallness, revealing the sheer enormity of the world and the universe around you. Personally, I find that comforting - that the problems that keep me so bogged down in life aren't that important in the grand scheme. If the universe can create galaxies, solar systems, and planets within aeons of dark space - the understanding of which we have only just scratched the surface of - then surely I can take care of whatever I need to.
Simon Wilkinson is an artist that I stumbled upon last year and, while I love most of his music, the track that really stuck out was NEBULA DRIFT. A 23-minute long ambient track, it let me lose myself in a soundscape that evokes a lonely journey through the depths of space, just you as the lone witness of all the wonders we cannot even fathom here in our own little bubble. When you need to relax or just some sci-fi inspiration, put on the headphones, crank it up, and just listen.
In 1959, eight students and their science teacher went missing in Idaho, USA. After a 14-day search police were led to a 4m square black cube in a desert over 50 miles away. Inside was eight letters written by the students to their parents detailing how the teacher has led them to an “alien ship” that will take them to the edge of the visible universe. None of the students, nor the teacher, have ever found and the case has been the source of much controversy and debate ever since.
UK performance artist, Simon Wilkinson has crafted and elaborate project inspired by this strange case, Beyond the Bright Black Edge of Nowhere and it will premiere at Fed Square in April 2014.

Namibia has some of the darkest nights visible from any continent. (via APOD: 2013 February 4 - Namibian Nights)
On some of my earlier musical posts I mentioned that I liked listening to "soundscapes". You might have wondered what is a soundscape? Well its kind of hard to describe but I'll try. A soundscape typically has no drum, no beat, no melody, no rhythm, not even notes really. What IS it then? Well I guess its like low level noise or just sound.
Um.....that dosen't sound like a good description......I know I'll post a soundscape.
Here you go, tune the world out with this ambient space soundscape.
