Simon is pretty heavily awarded creative who for quite some time wrote the advertising person's advertising blog, Scamp. After shutting it down a few years ago, he recently rebooted it at the same time setting up his own shop called, imaginatively enough, Scamp. As well as having won a stack of Lions, Pencils and other ad related trophies for agencies like BBH London and DDB London and Sydney, he's also written a book that's supposedly highly recommended reading for young creatives (sorry Simon, I never read it). He very nicely responded to my blowing smoke up his arse about his blog with some kind comments about this little thing you're reading here, which makes him alright by me. He also killed it with his selection:
First up is Levi's 'Drugstore', which is my all-time favourite ad.
Putting techno music over depression-era images was an act of utter genius. The part where the beat drops just as the steam train appears makes the hairs rise on my arms every time. And what a great twist at the end. This ad is cool and sexy, everything a Levi's commercial should be.
Next I am going to go for a Commission for Racial Equality print ad. It was done by two lovely Aussie blokes, Ben Nott and Adam Hunt, at Saatchi & Saatchi London, while I was there. I had recently become mates with them, although they had a little bit more experience than me, and the fact that two guys I knew could come up with something so awesome, just down the corridor, was incredibly inspiring. This is a very clever ad that I would love to shove up the arse of every racist twat in the world.
Finally, because I'm a bit of a gamer, I'm going to go for Dead Island.
A lot of ads aim to be emotive, but don't actually move you, in the same way that a lot of ads aim to be humorous, but don't actually make you laugh. This one genuinely did move me. It's pretty scary too!
