Red White & Blue (Simon Rumley, 2010).
FASHIONISTA movie - behind the scenes DP Milton Kam snaps Eric Balfour, EmbryEthan, and Amanda Fuller, downtown Austin, TX (Posted on Twitter by @simonrumley Feb 7, 2018)
One of the funniest movies i’ve ever seen was a no-budget film from Uganda called “Bad Black” (directed by Nabwana I.G.G.) that i saw yesterday . There were like 30 of us in the theater (it was shown at 4 PM, most people went to the evening showings) but the reaction was unlike anything i’ve experienced in cinemas. So genuine and honest. Another standout from the festival was Simon Rumley’s “Fashionista” which had this really amazing performance by Amanda Fuller and its intensity and the way it was shot reminded me a bit of Alex Ross Perry’s “Queen of Earth” which i dearly love. Had the opportunity to ask the director a question regarding it after the showing. Both highly recommended if you get the chance to see them (although probably very limited releases).
The perks of discovering these little films at film festivals that most people skip because they’re from “exotic” places. Little do they know what they’re missing.

RED WHITE & BLUE
2010, USA
Simon Rumley blew minds in 2006 with his debut genre feature The Living and the Dead, which swept up awards all over the festival circuit and established him as a major international talent.
Despite the fact that he already had a healthy back-catalogue of indie films prior to The Living and the Dead, the response it received assured that he's been at home in genre films ever since.
Red White & Blue is an equally devastating film in which three emotionally disfigured people find themselves at the centre of a multi-tiered revenge triangle.
Amanda Fuller plays Erica, a troubled young woman who spends her nights indiscriminately and compulsively bar-hopping and bed-hopping with the goal of self-obliteration.
She's not just racing towards death, she's also determined to take others with her; she's been diagnosed HIV positive and has made no effort to share this information with her numerous sexual partners (including Marc Senter of Chris Sivertson's The Lost and Brawler).
While this can be viewed as thoughtlessness and self-absorption more than direct malice, the fact is that she's so unable to connect to other people that life and death cease to hold meaning for her.
It's just a shallow routine that she engages in to numb the pain, but we get to see the lives she's affecting - she doesn't.
She engages in sex with strangers the way a cutter takes to their arms with razors — it's a form of self-destructiveness that only makes sense to the person who's doing it.
When she meets Nate (Noah Taylor), an equally battle-scarred individual who claims to be ex-military, she detects a crack in her hardened shell and decides to accept it, opening herself up to the possibility of love.
But her past indiscretions will catastrophically catch up with them all.
